Pistnbroke
Gday all Just had a sneaky taste of the last one I put down, and all I can say is wow! It's not the Fat Yak clone I was aiming for, but it's only been in the bottle 2 weeks and is already pretty damn good [love] Best part about it, its a damn easy one. It's a coopers IPA can, done to the following: 1KG Light Dried Malt 500G Dried Wheat Malt 15G Cascade @ 15 Min 15G Nelson Sauvin @ 15 Min 15G Cascade @ 0 Min 15G Nelson Sauvin @ 0 Min US05 Yeast Lessons learnt: I should know better, and should have checked it with the hydrometer, but I panicked when the airlock stopped, and bottled it (It was a very racy ferment as I have struggled to keep the temp under 20C with the warmer weather and no temp control). Next time, I will check the hydrometer and leave it longer. Bottles are showing alot of sedimentation, and could have been avoided by letting it go another week and settle out. Not as hoppy as I was hoping - Hints of the hops, but not what I was expecting/hoping - I suspect that this is due to the vigorous ferment driving off the hop oils. Will definitely be dry hopping some extras and maybe increasing the quantities to get that flavour/aroma back. All in all, a good one that I reckon ill be doing again for the next one with a couple of tweaks to the hop quantities.
Hairy
This looks pretty good. I assume the 0 minute additions were at flameout and not dry hopped. I would have thought that the IPA kit plus 30g @ 15 minutes would give a fairly high IBU. How bitter was it? There is a fair bit of malt in there though, so that may counter it a bit. Pistnbroke
Yep, the 0 min addition was at flameout. You are right though, when I calculated it out using my spreadsheet the IBU is quite high at 54.3 IBU. The 30G of hops at 15 min does however seem to balance out all that malt quite well, and has turned out quite delicious even at just 2 weeks. Perhaps the thing that saved me was I threw the hops in chux instead of loose, so that probably put my utilization down. I think next time I will be throwing the hops in the boil loose, and moving some of those hops to dry hopping instead.
