Black IPA

I was well impressed with Feral's Karma Citra. It's black IPA using Citra hops, and by far the best black IPA I have tried.

I am hoping that I can produce something similar using a Coopers kit as a base for the beer. Perhaps follow the IPA recipe and just steep some dark grains? Maybe?

Has anyone converted a coopers kit to a black IPA? Or have any ideas of hopping schedule which would be appropriate if using a kit as a base?

Thanks in advance

Well,I'm nearly done fermenting an American IPA now. My hop schedule looked stupid huge to some of you down under. But I can assure you,it's rather small by comparison.

Anyway,I was thinking of using the OS dark ale can with 3lbs (1.362kg) of Munton's plain amber DME.

Then,maybe 1oz (30g) each of Citra,Culumbus,& cascade. Or Amarillo,Columbus,Cascade. Something like that.

Just do all the hop additions from 25 minutes on down. Use half the DME in the boil, maybe 28 mins total to stir in half the DME,then mini hot break.

Then do hop additions as described. That'll give you mostly flavor & aroma from the hops, with very little bittering.

Then save some for dry hopping after FG is reached.

I'm very interested in the karma sutra, but what is Feral's Karma Citra. Is it sold in bottle o's or is it a recipe you made?[cool]

Peter, there is a Black IPA recipe in the current Brew Your Own magazine (a US mag). It is supposed to be a clone of Oakshire Brewing's O'Dark:30.

They suggest using Carafa II malt to make it a black IPA. Perhaps you could try:

1.7kg Thomas Coopers IPA can

1kg Light Dry Malt

300-350g Carafa II malt (grains)

200-300g Dextrose

Say, 21 litres.

And then throw your Citra hops in there somewhere. Add them early to the boil if you want to bitter it up a bit more, late in the boil for some flavour and/or dry hop them.

Just make sure you pitch enough yeast. If you only pitch the kit yeast it may not be enough.

If you do make this (or some variation) then let us know how it goes.
