Looks like i can return the favor, im an IT engineer :)

don't worry about tracking cookies unless your wanted by the FBI :)

tracking cookies do not chew up your data. there kinda of atemp file that website use to see what advertising your looking at storing certain data and clicking on etc (like when you go onto a page you've already visited and your email has already been put in a field). also it will help load a page faster, theres more to it but thats the jist of it . some people dont like them some people do.

sound like you have other issues if your internet is being used up so quickly.

whats your setup wirless ? internet dongle connected to 1 pc ?

do you leave the internet plugged in ?

how much datado you have and how long have you had your pc for with the current software on it (have you reimaged)

sorry for all the questions but its the only way we can sort it out.

you can also try installing a data counter. it will tell you exactly were your usage is going

bugger, that sometimes happens, monitor the usage and see what happens, you might have a program thats seeding something. you dont have a torrent downloaded (movies, music downloader) do you ? make sure thats not running. alot of them start automatically when windows boots

Hi Nedg, Anthony & Maniac.

I too use AVG Nedg. I initially used the free version some years back, & about 3 years ago paid up for their professional subscription. I've been happy with its features & how it operates etc. ever since. It's also an Australian company! [cool]

Anthony has given you some very good information that I agree with wholeheartedly. [rightful]

The main things that can slow your computer down while using the Internet are spyware/malware of which I use this FREE program to deal with that, & regularly run it at least once a week. On the surface it seems to find more of these cookies than other programs I've used in the past.

The other main interference I've found that can slow your Internet down is (as Anthony stated) from the programs or software that is installed on your computer that activates on Startup.

In many cases a lot of these programs do not need to be started up when your computer starts. They generally run in the background un-noticed by the user & either track &/or gather your usage of the software, or your Internet activity, & intermittently access the Internet to check for updates to it's program. With quite a few of these programs running simultaneously in the background, you can see how they can slow down your computer. [pinched]

Reducing the amount of these active software programs on Startup, along with the regular use of an effective anti-spyware/malware program can certainly minimise some levels of interference you may be experiencing.

I hope that helps.

Anthony.

I agree with this too.

I changed to Microsoft

Security Essentials. It is free and works good. I highly recommend it.

Also, we have biscuits in Australia, not cookies [innocent]

Seriously though - I hope you get it sorted Ned...I haven't got any tech advice but I'm here for moral support.

you can also press ctl + alt + del (same time)

go to start task manger then click on the network tab.

it will show you via a graph how much internet your using. let your wifi run but dont have any internet pages open if the graph does not show you anything its not your computer.

heres an example. its blank when everythings closed but when i load a video from youtube the graph starts.

Nothing at all, feel free to ask anytime.

ok so definitely not your computer...... shouldn't say definitely but very confident (99%) [biggrin] monitor it the same way for at least a week. i reckon taking it to a pc guy (paying for it) might be a waste of money.

You may have heard of "temp files" there bits of webpage saved on your pc to save loading time and download. try not deleting these pages if you get prompted. i think i clear mine every 6-8 months, it wont save you a hell of a lot but it will save some.

im leaning towards other devices sucking your usage. if youve changed your password and youve checked the other devices in the house next step would be contacting telstra ASAP and explaining your situation. they can tell you where your using the data , or at least how much data you've used on certain days.

If you have kids i would check out there pc as well. there pretty tech savy these days and know how to download films music[rightful]

either that or your secretly obsessed with downloading Mexican midget porn [lol]
