Plastic Barrel Tap

I find that I have to replace the barrel tap fairly often as it seems to sieze up after bottling a few brews. Does anyone have a solution that prevents the taps seizing up?

Unscrew the tap from your fermenter (when it's empty!), and stick a screwdriver down the barrel, or anything else that will reach right to the end inside. Holding by the tap, smack the butt end of the screwdriver down hard on something solid like a brick floor. The tap should separate into two pieces and you can clean out any gunk inside it. Just be aware that after doing this several times your tap might start to leak.

If you soak the tap in very hot water first to soften the plastic slightly it will come apart more easily and be less likely to leak.
