PeterR37 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 If I buy something called "Munich Malt", does that automatically mean it is a Crystal malt that will work in recipes that require that? Or are there different kinds of "Munich Malt" of which only some qualify as "Crystal"? Take this recipe for example: http://www.coopers.com.au/the-brewers-guild/how-to-brew/lager/oktoberfest 200g Crystal Malt (cararoma or munich malt) When I look for suppliers online lots either list "Munich Malt" or "Crystal Malt" - but none say "Crystal Munich Malt"... I feel quite noob asking this. I tried to search the forum here and googled for it, but did not find a straight answer.
AdamH1525226084 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 They are different. Munich malt needs to be mashed, crystal/caramel doesn't See JP's list (there are more now)
Hairy Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Caramunich is a crystal malt and can be steeped. But it is still different to Munich malt.

PeterR37 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Thanks for your replies. Glad I asked! The Oktoberfest recipe linked above is a bit confusing for beginners like me... That said: did any of you try this recipe, and which malt did you use? Just looking at this supplier here, without any additional information I would probably pick their Caramunich. Or do you spot something different in the list that you would expect better results from? http://www.bulkbrewingsupplies.com.au/#!weyermann-malt/c1bs6

The Caraaroma might be nice but would make the beer a bit darker.
PeterR37 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Caramunich it is :-) Looking at the recipe something else is a bit odd - the expected 4.4% ABV. Oktoberfest beer usually comes in at or over 6%. My first idea on how to fix this would be to replace the 500g DME with a 1.5kg can of liquid light malt extract. Anything wrong with that?
Ramjet Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 G'day Peter. That threw me a bit too. I waltzed into CraftBrewer when I was visiting the big smoke last week and (among a stack of other bits and pieces) said I needed 200g of, and rattled off the name AND the two in brackets. He said "Well which one do you want?" [crying] So as not to make my ignorance too obvious, I said one about 60L (memory item from John Palmer's book [cool] , and the receipt shows "Carared Malt W". Soon as I got home, dug out JP's book and refreshed my knowledge, esp. the bit discussing 'specialty' malts -- Caramel malts aka Crystal malts. The learning curve for an old K & K brewer is steep, but what a journey!
PeterR37 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Thanks for mentioning John Palmer's book, just checked online and found that my local library has a copy on shelf. That should be useful reading for the holidays... [biggrin]
Ramjet Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 His book is pretty popular among the guys here, and I got mine just recently for about $25 delivered, via Fishpond.com.au. Your LHBS might have one too. Only problem with getting it out of the library is that social etiquette dictates that you have to give it back. [devil]
PeterR37 Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 I got mine just recently for about $25 delivered' date=' via Fishpond.com.au [/quote'] Did you know about booko? If you often buy books online they help you find the best deal: http://booko.com.au/9780937381885 Unfortunately most of the time overseas sellers win, but then it takes 2-3 weeks to get it. By going to the library I can test drive the book and if I like it and order soon the bought copy will arrive about the time I have to return the borrowed one [innocent] p.s.: the library is walking distance, the nearest LHBS 10km from home...
