Carbonation Drops going cheap

My local Woolies stopped stocking the Coopers DIY products a couple of months ago. I know we're all for supporting LHBSs and that, but they're often not open when you run out of something half way through bottling [pinched] Luckily my local Foodland still does and, not only that, they stock a full range too. Woolies only used to have the enhancers and "brewing sugar" - no dex or light DME!

Absolutely mate, I used to use them myself, Im not talking about the drops themselves. I seem to remember something about bacteria having a hard time infecting 'dry' forms of sugar.

Its the way the drop gets from the bag to the bottle which I would worry about....At no other point in the brewing process would you allow your hands to come in contact with your equipment or wort ... Or would you [unsure]

CArb drops have been removed from Woolies in my area too..

and the home brand bottle caps are gone too..

only brew mix 2, and 3 varieties of goop, plus home brand lager.

i picked up 400 caps for under 4$ and 3 packets of carb drops for under 5$

Yep the same range here in Melb, only happened in the last few weeks. I didn't even see any items being cleared. Very disappointing cos it is convenient to grab stuff if you don't want to go far.

Don't know who they reckon would brew the homebrand goop. I read the instructions, says something like mix this can with 1kg of sugar and ferment at 20 to 27 deg, I don't remember the exact wording but with instructions like that I can't imagine the outcome to be a good one.

BTW, the Woolies reduction of Coopers products is a national snub. That's the way they do things. [annoyed]

I did empty the shelf of their remaining crown seals, for less than $2 per 100 though, when I went grocery shopping. [whistling

Good brewing guys.

Anthony.

Never heard them cheap, but if you listen closely you can hear them sizzle as they are absorbed into the brew (though you'd have to take the lid off to hear it).

I see how it seems a bit problematic handling carb drops bare handed after all that trouble washing and sterilizing everything, however, once your brew has fermented, the ph level and alcohol level would usually be high enough to inhibit most bacterial growth, hence the preference for dry hopping at about day 3 (you don't sterilize your hops pellets, and seemingly the chemical changes that occur due to hopping also inhibit bacterial growth).

Obviously everyone is different, but certainly I have been known to sterilize bare handed, which effectively sterilizes my hands.

I have also been known to use dishwashing gloves from time to time, as this reduces the risk of getting blisters from screwing on all those bottle tops.

I'd say provided you've done all your washing, sterilizing, and temperature control, provided you don't have a cold or some other contagion, your risk of contaminating your brew from bare handed carbonation drop insertion is negligible.

Just make sure you pop the lid on as soon as you've put in the drops and beer, so you don't allow any airborne muck to get in.

Imagine that! A batch of beer that gives people a cold! [lol]

I could use a few stubbies like that for some of the more 'special' staff at work! [bandit]

Edit: Forgot to laugh at the word 'insertion.' [lol]
