AlekseyP
Hi everyone, from Russia with love :) Just bought the DIY kit a couple of days ago, installed my first ever batch (Canadian Blonde). It has been 6 days since in the FV. After testing for SG tried it and... got a question :) - how should a 6-day Canadian Blonde really taste like? What I drank was a little bit sour, just a little bit, but with a nice bitter aftertaste. Not awful but definitely not a beer yet :) I am a little bit confused, might have spoiled it because haven't sanitised it before first use :( The rest seemed to be ok: fresh ingredients, right stable temperature (22 celsius), everything by the book. Canadian Eh!L
Hi Alekey, Welcome to the Order! I don't know if we've had a Russian on the forum before![cool] I'm not sure what a six-day Canadian Blonde should tate like but it should taste like beer. Not great beer but it should resemble beer. Let it sit in the FV for another week of so an try it again. It should be better by then. If the 'sourness' is more evident you might have a problem. Don't stress out about it though, I'm pretty sure it's fine. Good Luck![smile]
Hairy
Welcome to the forum Aleksey! Beer tastes better once it has finished fermenting, is carbonated and cold. Sometimes the tastings from the FV aren't the greatest. Good luck with it.

Welcome Aleksey, you're doing pretty much everything right, and the first time around everything seems a bit daunting and strange. The brew at 6 days will taste not much like the end product, and you won't really know what a "normal" taste is prior to conditioning until you've done a few brews and taste tests. Just leave it sit another week - preferably at a steady maybe even cooler temp, then bottle at around the 2 weeks mark (from initial pitching), presuming the FG seems right. When you bottle, make sure you don't open any to test for at least 2 weeks, and even then it will still improve over time. I'm currently drinking Canadian Blonde I bottled on 22 August, and I have to say at 3 months it really does taste very different and a lot better to my sample taste, so stop worrying, keep everything going the way you are and all should be fine. If not, then just wash and sterilize everything thoroughly before the next batch - and always wash and sterilize before and after each brew. PB2
G'day Aleksey, Welcome to the forum!! I'm interested to know from where you bought the DIY Beer kit and the Canadian Blonde can.

AlekseyP
I'm interested to know from where you bought the DIY Beer kit and the Canadian Blonde can. amazon.co.uk there were also 45 500ml bottles included instead of 30 740 ml which is very inconvenient because of the coopers carbonation drops, so much for their "accurate dosage" [roll] will have to cut them I suppose. The seller commented on this issue to use 1 drop for every 500 ml bottle, is that right?
Hairy
I don't like my beer to be extremely fizzy, although I don't mind it in a wheat beer. So for most of my beers, one carb drop per 500ml bottle would be perfect.
AlekseyP
I reckon you are an Aussie and don't come from Russia. C'mon man, be straight up about your origins.[bandit] [biggrin] unfortunately, no, I'm from Russia [alien]. Unfortunately because here in Russia all beer is really awful, probably the worst in the world [crying] and I love beer very much, was fortunate to try some german and czech and got a notion of what a good beer should be. You are blessed to have some good beermaking traditions and the Coopers of course [innocent] If you're referring to my English [happy] I just have a degree in English, so it's just professional. By the way do you know any online australian store with an international delivery to order Coopers ingredients? I have to order them in Europe and get them actually delivered to Far East of Russia (Vladivostok area) which is kind of silly because it makes a round the world trip [lol]
Otto Von Blotto
Hey Aleksey, firstly welcome to the forum, and brewing! What does the Baltika 3 Lager taste like? [lol] Reason I ask is because I bought 3000 bottle tops from a brew shop here which are branded, but I've never seen or tasted that beer.[biggrin]

[lol] Reason I ask is because I bought 3000 bottle tops from a brew shop here which are branded, but I've never seen or tasted that beer.[biggrin] You bought Baltika 3 branded bottle tops in Australia?! [cool] that's weird. Probably tops for Russian beer is made in Australia, interesting, better they make Russian beer in Australia [devil] Like I said today ALL Russian beer is awful compared to European for example. Actually some 10 years ago when I was a student Baltika 3 and Baltika 7 were one of my favorites, it seemed very good as maybe there was nothing to compare it to. But strangely when Baltika was bought by Carlsberg in mid-2000s their beer started to lose in quality [pinched]. And now all their beer (all around 50 brands they are selling) are the same in taste and it's not good. I can't even describe it - I would say it's tasteless, some mixture of herbs and pure alcohol, no flavour at all.
Otto Von Blotto
Yeah, I thought it was weird too actually. I had to Google image search "Russian 3 beer" to find out what it was. [lol] I do like the novelty of having branded bottle tops on my home brews though which is why I bought them in the first place. Anyway, by the sounds of it I won't be rushing out to buy any anytime soon, though I've never seen it available anywhere here anyway. I can get enough tasteless crap easily enough haha. We get a pretty large selection of craft beers in our local bottle shop, plus there are a number of bars where I live which stock heaps of them, and also a few bars which are also microbreweries and they only sell what they brew, some of them are really nice too! You sit at the bar, and the fermenting tanks are right behind it, it's pretty cool. [cool]
