DaveH21
Hi Guys I put down Muddy's Downtown Brown Ale. All went very smoothly until.... When filling up the FV with cool water just prior to pitching the yeast, I got confused with the liquid level between what was foam and what was liquid. The upshot is that I filled the FV up to 26.5 litres instead of the 23L [pinched] My my calcs, this means the final beer will be about 11% "thinner" than it should be. The yeast is now pitched (24 degrees) and the glad wrap on, but is there something I can do to rectify this? E.g. buy another tin of OS Dark Ale from Woolies at $13 and put in about a 1/5th of a can? Add more malt or crystal malt? Or should I just let it be, put it down to experience and do better next time? If I can rectify it easily, I would like to as I have been looking forward to this recipe. My name is DaveH - people call me Forrest Gump [sad]
Hairy
You can add a little more malt to get you to the same OG. Just put your figures into a brewing calculator to work out how much you need. Do you have any on hand? Your bitterness will be slightly lower but I wouldn't worry to much about it.
DaveH21
I got 330g of BE2 - which gives me about 80g of Light Malt and 80g of Maltodextrin (plus 160g of Dextrose) That should help?
Beeblebrox
Hi Dave - aka Forest - I'd be inclined to just go with it and chalk it up to experience, but if not, follow Hairy's advice. Good luck, and remember, no matter what mistake you make, someone somewhere has already done worse, and at least you can learn from it. Cheers. Hairy
Based on Muddy's response, the OG should have been around 1050 in 21 litres. You are probably at 1040 in 26.5 litres. If you add another 500g LDM to your 26.5 litre batch, you will increase your OG to about 1047. If I were you, I would buy 500g LDM today or tomorrow and add it to your brew. But if you couldn't be bothered then you will just have a beer that is of lower strength but still very nice. Up to you.
DaveH21
I tipped in the 330g of BE2 oh well, it still might be OK to drink - jus not as good as I was hoping for The Krausen has a powerful effect on the weak minded.....

DaveH21
OK - how bad is this going to be? I'm fully prepared to buy another tin of OS Dark Ale and tip about 1/5th into the brew, which along with the 330g of BE2, might/should fix things up? You could do that but I would just leave it as is now. You may have improved Muddy's recipe.
DaveH21
Thanks everyone - appreciate it! The stupid thing was that even thought i thought it was a 23L recipe, it was at 21L and was going to stop there as the temp was down to 24 degrees. Except I thought it was the foam at 26.5L - and then it wasn't. I'll leave it for now and see how it tastes in a month bloody annoying though[devil]

DaveH21
After drinking and reflecting during a few pints of Coopers Pale Ale, and then Nine Tales Amber Ale, 'm going to splurge on a tin and add 400-500g of OS Dark Ale. I'll add it when I dry hop at day 3 So I'll either have something really good or an infected pile of rubbish[lol]
