Buying a keg setup

Recommended Posts

Hi guys just wondering if any of you recommend a keg setup located in Melbourne. i hear a lot of problems with too much foam, have any of you experienced this.

Keg king offer a package however theres a lot of negative feedback regarding cheap parts used in their taps.

i was thinking of buying the fridge from them and then sourcing high quality parts.

any thoughts

Hi Anthony - I'm seriously considering getting one of the Craftbrewer Kegerators and kitting it out with flow control taps (Perlick or similar) and all the bells and whistles to get it right the first time. Ross at Craftbrewer reckons it'll set me back about $1500 for a quality setup - I told him I want to get the good stuff first time rather than having to upgrade later. They'll send it to Sydney for $50 which is quite reasonable...I don't reckon it'd cost much more to send it to Melbourne.

I was going to buy and convert a freezer and put a keezer together myself but I have no tools or work area and thought it'd be more trouble than it is worth.

i spoke to him today, he knows his stuff and has some good reviews.

i told him what i wanted and he quoted me up. he basically said to source the fridge from melbourne as there all the same but definatly get the parts from him. PM me and ill send you the quote, let me know what you think

Unfortunately the PM function doesn't work on this site but if you wouldn't mind emailing me the quote I'd really appreciate it.

I'm going to Brissy in March and am holding off buying anything until I get a chance to drop into craftbrewer and have a face to face chat.

I've got the keg king fridge. It's not terrible but it needs a bit of fiddling. So far I've changed to perlick front sealing taps because the stock ones jam up with dried beer. I've changed the included lines for longer ones. Also have my beer lines running through some copper tubing to try and keep them cool inside the tower. The foaming isn't too bad. If I pour a pint I'll have about 30mm of head. If I pour a middy it's generally 80% head. But that's first pour, once the tap/lines chill a bit it's no problem. If I was to start again I would probably go with a converted chest freezer. A> the lines would be chilled all the way to the tap. B> I could have extra room for cold keg storage

Hey Mikey

I've also got the Keg King Kegerator. Been pulling beers from it nicely for around 10 months. It was pouring perfectly until the gas bottle got very close to empty. Initially I cut the lines due to suspect calculations, purchased some joiners set the reg at 14kPa and the fridge at 6'C and its sweet.

Yes my taps stick if not used for a couple of days, I thought this was normal but thanks to your post Mikey I can now look at some options. Do you have a linky?

Sreiously.. for $1500.. you could set up a 400lt freezer with a collar with Andale Taps [love]

I really dont know why people go the CB route when a reasonably simple build can future proof your setup...

Please consider something, even an all fridge with taps over a kegerator... really easy to setup and will outlast you and/or last half a lifetime.

I saw a fellas freezer yesterday that had 10 taps [love] (drool)

Ive gone an all fridge that I can easily fit 4 kegs with 3 taps (Andale Floryte)

At the very least, explore the options guys...

I'd love to put one together myself Yob but I can barely fit a small kegerator in let alone a freezer large enough. I have no tools, no work area and don't know anybody with tools. Beleive me, I've done the measurements and been researching my options for a long, long time. I already will have to sacrifice my brewing supplies area and most of my bottles to fit in a kegerator [pinched]

I hope to future proof my setup by getting quality fittings. For size, expense and quality reasons I can't see a regular fridge that can fit in the small footprint I have being any benefit as I could only fit 2 kegs in it. Though through the door taps would be nice rather than a font.

Why do think a fridge would outlast a kegerator? I was led to believe that the CB one was a good product if kitted out correctly.

As for Andale taps I only know what I've read about them but will continue weighing up the options and would welcome any ideas of the pros and cons of various high quality taps. I believe they first came on my radar when you mentioned them elsewhere and I believe you said they deserve more credit. Why are you a fan?

But yeah, ultimately I do agree with what you've said but my means and supplies make it nearly impossible. From what I've seen in your photos my apartment is smaller than your brewing area alone.

But all advice is welcome and I am still weighing up all the pros and cons.

Re Andale Tps. Long lasting, great quality (Australian made) and mine balanced right off the bat, plug and play... also, they dont drip or leak.. Im thinking of giving away my drip tray as it's not yet been out of the box... nor is it likely too [bandit]

I went the shank and door seal option simply because I had the right fridge for it.. in a squeeze I rekon I could get 6-8 kegs in there (with a bit of shelf reinforcing) and with dip tube flow restrictors I rekon I could/can also reduce the hose line length to sweet FA.

I dont think that the footprint of a kegerator is that different to an all fridge apart from the height obviously... and that may well be the factor that drives your purchase.

I wish you were closer Muddy, Id come round and build the thing for you.

In all honesty, I tried to future prrof myself a little bit when I went the build and like you, spent a long time in the planning.

Anywhoo.. give Andale some thought, many many many pubs use them for a reason yeah? and also, I think they are sexier than the perlicks et al. [roll]

there's a shop around the corner from my joint so from a service side of things it would be really helpful, just not sure if there systems are crap or not

When I bought my Keg King set-up it was all about aesthetics. I have it in the family room and plan to move it to the dining room. Even when I was buying it a bloke tried to convince me, in front of the storeowner, that I should just get a fridge and modify it. SWMBO was there and said no way.

That said I have another keg king gas bottle in a fridge with 4 kegs, this one is in the garage and for ageing only, its too far to go for a top up.

Anyway as I said the only issues with the taps are that they stick when left idle for several days, so I am all ears to any Mods that Anthony or MikeybyCrikey have made to the tap set up.

Hey Anthony, I like the idea of the fan blowing cold air. I just don't like the idea of a fan running all day (stupid I know considering all the money I spend on homebrewing stuff and I'm too tight to run a small fan)

As for you Scotty I have 3 of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Perlick-Perl-525PC-Forward-Sealing-Beer-Tap-Home-Brew-Brewing-Beer-/271091677175?pt=AU_Breweriana&hash=item3f1e52b7f7&_uhb=1#ht_705wt_952 . Though you can get em cheaper, I ordered 6 (3 for my eldest brother) and they worked out $32.50 each shipped from America.

Definitely agree on the aesthetics point. While it's pretty damn expensive it does look nice, so nice it makes the rest of my lounge room look untidy.

I wish you were closer Muddy' date=' Id come round and build the thing for you.[/quote']

I wish you were too Yob - I crunched the numbers of flying you to Sydney and getting you accommodation for a few nights and unfortunately it really blew out the budget...I could just about buy a pub for the price [biggrin]

Yeah Scottie, just screws straight on the shank! Now I dunno how handy you are but you might wanna cut up a tool to tighten it up (or buy one). I did mine with a sock and a set of pliers at first, then a couple weeks later work was quiet and I made a tool up and found mine was fairly loose. Not sure how much that matters but I imagine any source of air leakage is bad in a keg system.
