Pitto
i have done a few cans now since september and have putdown mainly pale ales and cervesa's. Today i put down a lawnmower lager. i have a pale ale can and kit waiting in the wings, whats my next step on the slippery road of home brew, is it dry hopping? and what do we all think would be a good, easy recipe to go along with using the pale ale can as the base. thanks Glenn
Hairy
Good move Glenn, taking the next step. If you want to take it one step at a time then a steep or dry hop would be the way to go first. Cascade is a great first up hop and goes well with the APA. Maybe: APA kit 1kg Light Dry Malt 25g cascade hops - dry hop after 3-4 days in FV 23 litres The next step would be to add some grains like crystal and a short hop boil. Pitto
so , dry hopping, i.e in a clean chucks/muslin bag and drop it into the fv? tnx
Hairy
Yep, sounds good. Depending on where the muslin bag has been stored you may want to sanitise it first by boiling it in water for 15 minutes before using it.
GregT5
Exactly, Glenn. On about day 4, put 25g of Cascade pellets in a new chux cloth, straight out of the pack & drop it in the FV. Leave it in there & chuck it out after you have bottled. If you are using a muslin bag, make sure it is big enough for the pellets to swell a fair bit. Using a bag means you are probably going to have to clean it after you have bottled, that is why I use a chux cloth, just chuck it when it is all done. Pitto
ok, great, this gives me a "next step" to my home brew adventures. Big Thanks GP
Guest
dont forget to weigh it down with something like a stainless steel knife or some such object that is east to sanitise.. they can have a tendency to float and you get a better result if they are fully immersed. Hairy
You can do one of each. Steep 15g and dry hop 15g.

Were you happy with the end result? Cheers AdamN
Pitto
yeah, i like it. i wish i had a fridge and temp controller on it to sort out the sediment that i get, but other than that, its pretty easy to drink. I mainly brew it for the other half, as i prefer more of a Pale Ale, but i wont say no if its in the fridge cold [cool] My Pale is is down, i did the hop tea and dis the LDM/can mix and is now sitting in my tub of water with ice bricks. Lucky for me, the next few days are forcast as rain, so i hope the temps will be lower than normal to give the flavours a chance. Pitto
its killing me, not rushing in and bottling it early. it will be 14 days this thursday and must hold out to the weekend. cant wait to try it once it bottle conditioned. Hairy
You can bottle it now if you want to. Assuming FG was reached a little while ago then 11-12 days in primary is fine.
LordEoin
Aye, bottle away. It's probably not going to benefit much from leaving it longer. get it in the bottles when convenient and start another brew [happy]

Pitto
bottled it tonight, the aroma's were insane, really looking forward to this one. i have another APA can and some BE2, whats another hop i can whack in with this for variety? Scottie
i have another APA can and some BE2' date=' whats another hop i can whack in with this for variety?[/quote'] Hey Glen It all depends on what you are after. Do you want to stick with the fruity (citrus) hops, or go for something earthy or spicey? Do you want to try another single hop with a view to combining the two in the next brew? If it were me, I'd be looking to continue down the American Pale Ale route, my taste buds aren't that delicate and I find the EKG and Hallertau to be more subtle. I'd also be looking at progressing to a combination, so I would go for Galaxy used in exactly the same way but bare in mind it will be more in your face, but I like it [love], when you combine this with Cascade you will get some LCPA flavour. Other option is Amarillo, but I would use 25g as the dry hop (to me it is not as in your face as Galaxy or even Cascade), later when you combine this with Cascade you will get PB2s Fruit Salad Ale. Thirdly after this brew try and use 1 kg of light dry malt instead of BE2 and then in the next one combine a can of APA with a can of Coopers wheat malt extract (liquid malt) and add your hops to that. You'll be racing down the side of the Mountain with the rest of us in no time at all [innocent]

Pitto
thanks guys. being an ex fremantle boy, having the sail & anchor and little creatures as my locals, my beer taste's have always been around the likes of LCPA, beez knees, redback. but when i buy commercial beer, its always been coopers pale, gage roads sleeping giant india pale ale, LCPA and the likes. dare i mention it, but i also like Bintang [pilsener] in a sort of "comfort food" kind a way. as i said, the aromas coming off the beer i bottled last night were insane, the flavour when i tested the hydrometer sample was great. i will hit the LHBS up today for some more hops and see how i go. i have a small sample cupboard that i keep a couple of bottles o each brew in and i will one day pull them out and do a comparison taste test.
