about ourselves

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

My real name is Anthony, & I reside in Adelaide, South Australia. The home of Coopers.

I've recently turned 45 (I can't believe I'm saying that!), am an upholsterer by trade & have worked in the retail liquor industry for the past 16 or so years. I'm currently working in a drive-thru bottleshop which Hairy continues to claim is really a McDonald's. lol

In the past I also worked at the soon to be defunct GMH Holdens, so if you own a Holden built between 1993-2000, there is a 50% chance that I contributed part of the build of it. [rightful]

Many of the more senior members on the forum would likely class me as a shit stirring, overbearing PITA, & that's just the way I like it. biggrin On the flip-side, I would bend over backwards (well as far as my arthritic restrictions allow) to help others outside myself.

I have a good sense of humor & enjoy a good chuckle. I don't take myself too seriously, & am quite comfortable 'taking the mickey out' of myself. I find that a good strategy around here, because if you don't have the time to take the mickey out of yourself on the forum, there are ample around here that given the opportunity, will swiftly & kindly do that for you! lol

I live & breathe Pale Ales, cook a mean rotisserie pork, & follow Port Power in the AFL.

Cheers,

Lusty.

The only 'liquor' part of your industry is selling soft serve cones tongue

Great to see so many new contributors to this thread. I am sure Nick would be impressed, he hasn't been around for a while but he was a top bloke when he visited here.

Hey Lusty, I thought all bottle shops were drive through unsure

Hi GregT5.

Given I have family ties to the Morgan community through my mother's side of the family, & have a good work mate that lives in Bagot Well, it's nice to see where your loyalty lies. surprisedtongue

Western Sydney philosophy obviously feels more like home! unsuretongue

Seriously, nice to see you posting more regularly of late & I hope your brewing is still going well. smile

Lusty,

I read Hairy's post & had a mental image of a McDonalds/SipnSave collaboration. Sorry if it came across as "taking sides" against you.

You would be one of the few on this forum who knows where Morgan is & I can guarantee there is even fewer who know where Bagot Well is!! It would be a fair drive to work for him.

Brewing is still going along steadily, still kits n bits. I bottle mostly into stubbies (which is a bit of a PITA) but a fair bit of the consumption of said brews happens on the golf course, so convenience is a bit of a consideration.

Will drop in to grab a "soft serve" one day when I am on the way to Adelaide the "old way". The Northern Expressway cuts out that part of our trip.

Cheers

Greg

He has a really good way of doing that! pouty Don't be seduced by "The Dark Side"! tongue

Sorry if it came across as "taking sides" against you.

No apologies ever necessary from you GregT5. You have a really good sense of humor & a quick wit that I enjoy & chuckle at most often' date=' even at the expense of it being used on me! [img']lol[/img]

I just wanted you to know' date=' that I know the area reasonably well & have spent a bit of time through there over the years. A lot of good memories. [img']joyful[/img]

You are right about my work colleague. He claims 45mins each way.

Did you ever bother to contact the Brew Adelaide supplier I suggested to you a little while back? unsure

Nigel is a good bloke & can get hold of almost anything you want at good pricing. He resides out at the northern part of Smithfield/Munno Para & could open a few new doors for you with your brewing without much extra effort on your part.

Cheers,

Lusty.

1961 model, live in the south of Sydney, I was a 10 pound Pom at the age of 9 best move my parents ever made cannot thank them enough for taking a big punt and moving to the "land of milk & honey"

started an apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer in '78 and have been with a big Aussie airline ever since. Have worked all over the world and whilst no longer on the tools am still with the same company 38 years later.

Started brewing in the early 80's when I was sharing a house with a bunch of blokes, we used to make the Coopers kits that came in a box the size of an apple box, used to buy them at Coles and just add 4 litres of hot water and pitch yeast. We had never heard of temp control or letting the wort condition but turned out drinkable beer. What a pity we didn't have all of this wonderful information back then, the Internet was still several years away.

After a 35 year break, and a fan of the craft beer movement I stumbled across a recipe on the Internet for a USA craft beer I was keen on and thought bugger it I'm going out next week and buying the equipment & essentials for the partial grain recipe. Made that brew and due to reading about a billion words online and watching countless brewing videos whilst my first batch was in the fermenter I wanted to develop my skills and see where it would take me.

I then moved straight to all grain after building an esky mash tun, converting a keg for a boil kettle and making a reverse flow wort chiller. My setup is still pretty basic but it makes great beer.

Edit re sporting pursuits

Still in pretty good shape for a 55yo.

after racing motocross as a teenager I discovered a vintage motocross club about 6 years ago, they only race bikes made before 1985 so it's basically a bunch of old blokes racing the bikes they rode as kids, trying to recapture their youth.

Just Like brewing I was instantly hooked and now have 5 bikes. Nothing better than sitting around a campfire after racing talking bullsh!t with mates, knocking back a few home brews.

Hey pcmax

It's good to see a 61 model taking up home "craft" brewing in 2015.

I myself took up home brewing in 2011 and switched to AG Home "Craft" Brewing in 2014.

My first Ale was a Fat Yak in 2010, at that stage I didn't make the distinction between Ales and Lagers or megaswill and craft beer. I always tried different beers, and often tried a Moo Brew Pils but mostly they were Lagers from different countries.

That all changed when the missus bought me a Mr Beer kit that I just couldn't get to seal. Unperturbed she took it back and arrived home with the Coopers DIY kit. I put my brew down all the time concerned that I was brewing it at 16 degrees Celsius in the family room. At some point before bottling I found this forum and have been here ever since (except for a two week period when I flamed my original forum handle ***** after a night were I consumed too many homebrews and inadvertently upset a top bloke who frequented the forum).

Tried Coopers Pale Ale to get some empty longnecks and then LCPA not long after that and I knew straight away that I had to get some hops into my beer.

I'm in reasonable shape for a 64 model, never been a big boozer or smoker, used to have a few after cricket in the 80s and 90s but did have a self imposed dry period three years or so at the end of the 90s when I was trying to set a good example for my eldest.

Started playing cricket again this year with my youngest (and my oldest when he's available) and feeling pretty good about it. need to do a far bit more in the fitness department if I intend to go around again next year but at the moment it looks like we'll make the finals of the 50 over comp which his a good result after we made the semi finals of the T20 comp. Playing tin the lower divisions but I'm under no illusion as to how hard it is for someone who has been around for 1/2 a century to make a come back after a 20 year lay off.

Cheers & Beers

Hiya All,

Nice to read a little more about you all – some interesting stories/histories there.

Guess I’ll throw something in about myself……..

45 years old (nearly 46 so Im getting closer to 50!) ……married with a 21 year old step daughter and a 5 year old daughter ….and a dog and cat. Only got Married in 2012 and been with my other half for about 14 years.

Very lucky to be a Dad after my wife and I struggled through 5 years of unsuccessful IVF, multiple miscarriages including one at 6 months - only to be told it couldn’t work for us due to my wife’s older age, …so we started looking at donor eggs from the US - then without any warning, no drugs, no planning and having not conceived in over 3 years….Bang, we got pregnant! Had to get through a lot of hurdles and medical issues and were lucky enough to have one of the best obstetricians in the Country (Think I paid for a part of his Porsche!) and at 6 months we were given the all clear and at 46 my wife delivered a healthy baby girl!....Even the Doc’s called us the ‘miracle couple’

I live in Melbourne and have been here for over 10 years….before that I lived in Adelaide for 13 years. Originally born in the UK and grew up in NZ – moved to Australia in 1992.

I work as a Financial Advisor for a mid-tier Accounting firm in the inner Eastern suburbs……been here for just over 3 years but in the profession nearly 20 years and worked for various corporates/banks/trustee companies. I am more of an Investment Specialist and spend most of my time doing Portfolio Management and Wealth Creation but also do Strategic Advice and other stuff and lots of retirement planning. I Like my job – good company, good colleagues and good clients and I like making money for people and helping them achieve their goals – that part can be quite satisfying. The down side is being a desk-bound screen jockey who’s only exercise at work is walking to the printer – as such I have to watch what I eat, exercise when I can and usually restrict my drinking to weekends.

I dropped out of school at 15 to wash dishes in a restaurant……. then worked in all sorts of jobs like cook, waiter, barman, bank teller, labourer, sales, ski lift operator etc - before going to Uni at 24.

Discovered alcohol, sex and drugs at about 16 and then partied pretty hard for the next 20 years or so………..settled down and live a much quieter life now. Grew up in new Zealand so Im a Rugby Union fanatic and don’t really watch any other sport, support the Melbourne Rebels and ofcourse the mighty All Blacks!

Don’t take myself too seriously and like to have a laugh at everything – including myself! , like to enjoy life – love good food, wine and ofcourse beer! Addicted to Music which has always been a huge part of my life – like all sorts; blues, rock, indie, alternative, jazz, metal, classical….you name it. I Like fishing (have a boat but rarely gets in the water now) , swimming, travelling, snow skiing and good movies.

Only a recent newcomer to brewing – always thought homebrew wouldn’t produce decent beer but met a guy at a beer tasting event and then tried his homebrew and was happily proved wrong. Now producing half decent beers myself – but continuing to learn the art.

Ok then.

I’m Jay as my forum name suggests. I am a 45 year old Pom, Brummie to be exact, who came here in ‘96. Wasn’t that excited about coming since all I ever saw of Australia was Home & Away and Neighbours. The wholesome, buffed lifestyle of drinking milkshakes and grumpy shop owners didn’t really appeal. But arrived and fell in love with the place straight away. Went home a few times but pretty much been here for 20 years.

Married an awesome Aussie lass and have a wicked 2 year old boy Ziggy. Live in Randwick after spending most of my time in Bondi burning the f*ck out of my skin and partying a LOT.

Got well into the Acid House scene when it kicked off in England around '87 and spent a lot of years doing a LOT of clubbing and a lot of Ecstasy, weed and also dabbled with acid and mushrooms. Incredible times and an amazing era to be involved in. Incredibly exciting music and a general feeling of positivity and joy in England that hadn't existed since the 60's. A time where I distinctly saw a change in people from one of aggression and division to people black and white, rich and poor being friendly, accepting and embracing one another. This arguably caused the decline in a lot of football hooliganism at the time too. I know that drugs cause a lot of problems with a lot of people, but my story (and most of my friends) is one of great times and the shaping of my outlook on life and personality in a very positive way.

Still very much into my music. I love a huge variety of stuff. Electronic, Indie, Rock, Latin, Reggae, Dub, Disco, African, Ambient, Hip Hop, Motown, Soul, all sorts as long as it’s good! Try to go to gigs as much as possible. Occasionally a festival but very picky and choosy about those these days.

My top 20 albums are. (Recently compiled this after a painful elimination process)

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Pulp - Different Class

Massive Attack - Blue Lines

Massive Attack - Protection

Happy Mondays - Pills, Thrills and bellyaches

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Radiohead - King of Limbs

Tears For fears - The Hurting

Tears For Fears - Songs from the Big Chair

New Order - Substance

Portishead - Dummy

Depeche Mode - Violator

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

The Cure - Mixed Up

Rose Royce - The Hits

The Cult - Love

Leftfield - leftism

Primal Scream - Screamadelica

The Smiths - The World Wont Listen

Love travelling with a passion. So have seen quite a bit of the world, backpacked for a year with my wife, and have also travelled on my own for 7 months and 5 months to a lot of countries such as India, Jordan, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Mozambique, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia and many many more. Did a month of voluntary work in rural Tanzania helping build a school. Probably the most incredible experience my wife and I have ever had.

I’m a graphic Designer. I work in advertising, which is an industry that contrary to what a lot of people think, is mostly comprised of very lovely, genuine, smart, creative and fun people. But have worked at McDonalds, Wimpys, been a delivery driver, a store detective, security guard, builder, greengrocer, waiter, barman and picked fruit amongst other demoralising things.

Got into this beer making lark when my wife kindly bought me a kit for my birthday about 2 years ago. Love it and as some of you know, am on a quest to make an excellent Pilsner... still a long way to go yet. Made some pretty successful Ales, (c'mon they are a LOT easier to brew) and was blown away by how nice my Coopers Fruit Salad Ale came out after about 3 pretty crap lagers. Get so much satisfaction from brewing and am very slowly getting some of my friends to move away from VB and Carlton. Been a beer wanker a few times in the early days as my eyes were opened up to different beers. Generally keep quiet now unless asked.

Will take this opportunity to thank all you guys and gals too. It’s quite an amazing thing this forum. I immediately felt a lot of love and genuine care on it. I thank you all for your advice, patience and giggles throughout my learnings. I usually sneak a peak at it a couple of times a day. Have worried sometimes that my comments have been taken the wrong way, and should maybe use more emoji’s to confirm my tone. Just cant bring myself to do that yet.

oh go on then...biggrin

Cheers Jay

Is this the Heaven VMX group?

Just read your post and got very excited! I did 5 years of Schoolboy MX in England in the 80's. I miss all that fun I had. Would love to get an old bike again. Love camping too. Combining it with beer now I'm older too is just too much to take in!

Awesome thread. I spent considerable time the other day reading through the posts and was just amazed at the stories and backgrounds. I sometimes assume some of the old heads actually 'know' each other as in have met or caught up occaionally. Just as likely though is the fact we are all spread around the globe, united in sharing ideas and experience around brewing without actually 'knowing' each other. I tend not to post much but read the forum daily. It always instills the old warm and fuzzies to see the more experienced on here being patient with the newer brewers and often giving the same tips again. Well done lads.

Which brings me to a short version of my story. I'm 47, married for the second time around the past 14 years. 2 boys 13 and 10 and a girl 8 from this marriage. None from the other one. I'm a high school teacher on the Gold Coast.

I actually grew up on the Gold Coast but moved away from time to time for work when a bit younger. I even lived in Canberra for almost 9 years and loved it! I've worked in various jobs including a long stint with Flight Centre - I started when there were 3 people at head office and saw incredible growth in my time. Was lots of fun.

A stint in the pharmaceutical industry followed (hated it) and we then had a pizza business which we expanded to the point of looking to franchise. 7 years ago I went pretty crazy and ended up in a psych hospital where they found 2 brain tumours, 1 big enough to kill me. It took 12 months to get fit enough for the operation and 6 years ago the largest tumour was removed. The smaller remains in the middle of my brain and hopefully will do nothing in the years to come. (both were benign) I'm now only a little crazy ????????.

My wife refused to let me return to the pharma job as she knew how much I hated it. A mate suggested teaching so I did my extra year at Uni and landed a job at a great school and have been there the past 3.5 years and absolutely loving it. I teach but also work very closely with kids with serious problems(suicide, harming, abusive relationships etc). Heartbreaking at times but you can see the difference you can make almost immediately by stopping and listening. Being older and having life experience has really helped.

I picked up a craft brew kit from Target when they were $10 and gave it a go. I stumbled on this forum and soon had 2 full size fermenters on the go and about 150 glass bottles. I can't believe how good the beer is that I brew especially compared to previous efforts in my younger days. Lots of thanks to everyone on here. I regularly brew a Stone & Wood clone as my wife and neighbours love it. I also do stouts and a mate of mine that has brewed before and absolutely knows his beer cannot believe my 3 can RIS is home brew. My favourite at the moment is Scotty's Styx River Pale - thanks Scotty!

I was hospitalised 3 weeks ago with clots in my lungs from a knee injury I suffered around New Years. While there they found my heart out of rhythm and it is only pumping at 15 percent. Technically heart failure. I'm now on a truck load of meds and awaiting a scan in 4 weeks to see if there has been any improvement or my heart is totally farked (medical term). I haven't had a beer since early Jan but hope once things are stabilised I can do the occasional brew and enjoy it. Another Styx will be first!

Thanks for everything fellas - great tips, recipes and laughs. Cheers!

Lots of new handles around so time for a bump.

Still home brewing, but a reduced throughput. I am trying to stay Alcohol free during the week and rarely have more than four a day over the weekend(inc Friday night).

Pulling the pads on again this year, just back from the first training run and the good news is that I hit every ball that I tried to hit.

Ok... been here a good few months now so maybe I can reveal a little more!

You know me as "Blacksands" which is a name that is inspired the rich in black iron sand West Coast beaches here, and also the name of my one-man business - "Black Sands Music" . I was born in the UK but grew up in New Zealand, and consider myself a Kiwi, though I still hold a UK passport!

I used to work in IT but was tossed aside a few years ago and have been unable to re-enter the workforce (I'm 56). Ageism is a real issue when it comes to employment! But I'm also a record producer/musician/composer, singer-songwriter and landscape photographer and earn a very modest dollar now and then through these activities. I also shoot and edit video (music usually). Currently editing promo videos for a friend Eddie (former keyboardist for Split Enz and early years of Crowded House).

I have a band called The Stragglers:

https://thestragglers-nz.bandcamp.com/

I've recorded and produced 14 of my own albums over the last 14 years and collaborated on many others:

https://ianrushton.bandcamp.com/

I occasionally sell photos :

I'm married - 2nd time, but have two kids previously: my son (27) works for NZ Vodafone posted in the Phillipines and a daughter (19) who is on a 4 year scholarship studying at Brisbane Uni. I was diagnosed with renal cancer in 2013, but that has been dealt to and so far I am in the clear. Phew!

My name is Ian Rushton, and I'm a home brewer! cool

Probably ran into your daughter at work if she catches the bus to uni, I do a fair number of services to and from the universities. Don't worry though, I'm very happily attached tonguelol

I play guitar myself and have been in a couple of bands over the years but nothing major. Not doing anything with it at the moment but might jump into it again one day. Brewing has kinda taken over as my #1 interest in the hobby side of things.

Having a listen to some of your tracks now Blacksands , seeking solitude sounds great ! ,Edmund is fave so far .

Otherwise i'm still doing same things as i posted earlier this year , advanced a bit in brewskills since then as far as moving to AG .

Now have had my work on national TV a few times on various home improvement shows and available to order from any Bunnings store ....i apply same quality standards whether i'm building ,cooking ,brewing or ummm cuddling so it will do exactly what it's supposed to .

Good idea to bump this Scottie , plenty of new faces around and realised how many of the ones who were regulars when i got here have wandered off ....Where are Anitiphile & Beebs for a start ?

Pretty cool Ian

Just listening seeking solitude off Black Sands

cool

Cool. Check out the 3rd track "Adrift" when you get the time. The tasteful guitar soloing on this one was played by a guy called Steve Fogal USA (he's also on "Solitude"). He quickly became one of my fav guitarists after the work he did on this album.

Probably ran into your daughter at work if she catches the bus to uni
Yup.... she catches buses regularly' date=' and also works in one of the local Coles supermarkets.

Yeah, the rewards playing music aren't so great, brewing (and drinking) beer however... biggrin

Edmund is fave so far
That one is a co-write with a muso buddy of mine' date=' an expat Aussie (Sydney) living in Hong Kong.

Jet is one seriously talented dude! He's one of only a few of my international collaborators that I've ever actually met in person... twice. Most recently, I crashed for a few days at his pad in HK back in October. cool

I thought I might as well introduce myself for my first post on this topic.

Most people call me Youngie and I am 33 years old. I live on the Central Coast on NSW and have lived here my entire life. I have been married for almost 10 years and have 3 awesome boys. I really really enjoy barbecuing and sport.

I have only ever had 2 jobs. Woolworths for 7 years and currently I work for the railways and I have worked there for almost 11 years.

I have been casually brewing for a couple of years and I am getting serious by saving all my money for a Grainfather which I will hopefully have in the next couple of months. I currently have a temperature controlled fridge and a chest freezer that I have converted into a fridge that holds 2 kegs and has a double tap font coming out of the top.

My ultimate afternoon would be relaxing while drinking beer and watching sport out the back with the smoker going and the kids playing in the yard!!
