Carbonation Drops

Recommended Posts

Office discussion brought up the subject of which sugars can be used in place of Carbonation Drops. Can anybody advise whether these can be used and what effect they have on the brew: icing, castor, white, brown and raw sugar?

I once used icing sugar.. and it primed the bottle just the same as white sugar and carbonation drops. the only difference was that the icing sugar made the beer froth up alot when bottling.

Icing sugar is usually cut with starch (which is not fermentable) to prevent clumping. Don't use it. We recommend that you use an easy to handle and measure form of sugar such as normal old white or raw sugar. Prime at the rate of 8 grams per litre - one rounded teaspoon is approximately 6 grams. Buy a sugar measure from a home brew store if you can.
