Pitto
bottling time, i hae some questions. i have the DIY kit and the bottles are brand new, do i need to sanitized them, or can i just rinse them. i have read a few posts here and i am not sure on the most painless way to sanitize the bottles. Thanks Glenn
harviek
IMO you've gone to the trouble of brewing the beer properly why risk it just sanitise them. How do I do it? I use Sodium Metabisulphate, rinse pour into next bottle and then stand upside down for 30mins so any residual drains out. Then bottle. Nick
Hi Pitto, what harviek said +1. get into the habit of sanitising everything that comes into contact with your beer and you wont go wrong. there are many ways and methods of sterilising and just about all of us have their own special method. for mine unscented household bleach is as quick and painless and cheap as any. soak everything for at least 5 minutes and then rinse. not trying to dredge up best sanitising method arguements, just saying that clean gear is good gear.[rightful]
BrewingBenny
My best investment was startsan. I mix at a ratio of 1.6ml to 1ltr of water. As long as everything has been thoroughly cleaned before hand the mixture can be re-used over again. I have had no spoils so far and all my gear is second hand (one FV was not in the greatest condition) as long as all surfaces are soaked in the solution all well and good. I have a spray bottle with solution in it and every 2-3 days I spray the whole FV and up into the tap just to be sure to be sure. Starsan is no rinse so theres no risk of re contamination. I even soak my caps in a container with some solution, and spray the capper down before capping. Any which way you go good luck and I am sure even with my minimal experience you'll end up with a great drop. There are so many people on here with great advise it's up to you to adapt to the way that suits you best, just because it's different doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. Lotm
+1 to everything above. My bottle sanitising process is basically pouring the same starsan from bottle to bottle, giving each good shake. I also soak the opening of each bottle in starsan along with the caps. If the bottles have been used before, rinse them with hot water immediately after finishing the beer, then sanitise them on bottling day. If they are new, just sanitise them. If you can't find starsan, Brewers choice sells brew San that is similar. The no-rinse stuff make life way easier.
Pitto
thanks for the feedback, the first brew is bottled and the FV has been cleaned, sanitized and put back into service with an Original Pale Ale this time. [cool]
Muddy Waters
Get yourself a bottle tree and bottle tree rinser. They take all the pain out of sanitising your bottles. As long as you give them a rinse as soon as you have emptied the bottle of beer all you need to do is give them a spritz with starsan or iodophor solution (bothe are great no rinse products) a few minutes prior to bottling and you are good to go. I'm with Muddy.[joyful] In fact I beleive this is the first thing Muddy and I ever agreed on. At first I was a bit set in my ways and hard headed, but now I'm with the "in crowd"[innocent] . I think[unsure] .
GregT5
I'm with you, Chad. One of Muddy's posts convinced me that the family would do well to get me a bottle rinser for sanitising for Fathers Day. A mate donated his bottle tree when he gave up brewing. [so far no spoilage experienced] Apart from a very unhealthy and bad product, Sodium Metabisulphate does not kill all the bugs. I would definitely get rid of it and get Starsan or Iodopher. Mainiac
I have the bottle tree and sanitizer that shoots up into the bottle that sits on top of the tree. It makes bottling much easier.
Barramullafella
After 10 days in FV it was time to bottle the Woolager Plus. The OG was 1.034 and FG was 1.010. It was sitting at this for 2 days. Recipe was Woolies Lager 1.7kg, Saunders Liquid Malt 1kg, Dextrose 250gm, Malto 250gm. Calcs as 3.7% abv in the bottle. Bit lower than the 4% I was aiming for but I used to drink commercial swill that was 3.5% so no biggy. As this is a comparison with my first Woolager [which had .5kg less malt] I am keen to test first bottle at the mandatory 1 week aged period Cheers. Malter White
@Barramullafella Did you just use the kit yeast or did you provide your own?
Barramullafella
Just now, MUZZY said: @Barramullafella Did you just use the kit yeast or did you provide your own? I used the kit yeast Muzzy. I found it to be a very energetic thing and wastes no time in getting the service done. I had read elsewhere that Woolies kit is supplied by Toohey's. Not sure on this other than the person relaying the message used to, or still does, work at Woolies.
