Strong smell in fermenter?

Martin

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to have quite a strong smell of the beer in fermenter after it's been washed, rinsed, dried, & stored for a few weeks?

Any suggestions of how to get rid of it if it's not supposed to smell?

Cheers - Martin

Follow the cleaning/sanitising instructions under the lid of the concentrate.

Bleach will get rid of that smell...no problems!!

A good rinse with hot water should dissipate the chlorine smell effectively.

heh... Bleach will get rid of the smell by replacing it with a bleachy smell. But I honestly don't have any validity to my claim because I have never used bleach.

If you clean and rinse with boiling water only, then yes there does remain a yeasty smell in the fermenter. The more you leave the boiling water to soak the weaker the smell is.

I've found the smell doesn't do any bad at all, all my brews are gooood. My thinking of it is... I brew beer in my fermenter, so when it smells like beer, that's normal.

If the smell from the fermenter imposes itself with a slight taste in your beer... then better that the smell is of beer than bleach or any other cleaning agent.
