Hoptimus Maximus
Big W usually have them or try your local Home Brew Store. Some only go to 1.045 and obviously are not much chop for taking original gravities of big beers. I think it is fair to say that the bigger the scale range the more beer wasted in sampling. Or you could lash out and get a refractometer on eBay.
Hairy
I think it is fair to say that the bigger the scale range the more beer wasted in sampling John, how big is your sample tube? Is it jug size[biggrin] I usually only take 3 readings all up and I only half fill the tube when taking the OG. Admittedly I throw away half a sample tube of the first runnings but in the end it isn't much beer wasted. I guess you would probably notice it more if you were doing small batches like 10 litres etc.

Guest
If you can work out how to get a coopers hydrometer then you should let Warren know as he has been trying to get one for a long time now.

I overheated the plastic tube that came with it and it went all curly on me. When it gets near FG I use a test tube with a small hydrometer and only lose about 30ml. But this is liquid gold we are talking about mate. I was doing small 10.5 litre test batches but am currently working on 17.5 litre BIAB due to the size of my pots. Keep looking in the letterbox every day for my refractometer but tracking just says left HK for final destination.[crying]

weggl
Allan, dont tell me you got a "PLASTIC HYDROMETER" from your local HBS? If so tell me where it is i'll be there. If its glass keep it away from the dog or you wont have a dog for long. Must be glass, must be glass, must be glass!!![pinched] [pinched]
Trusty1
Do these new "PLASTIC HYDROMETERS" get more accurate the more they are used[annoyed] ? If not, you don't want one weggle. Straight from the DIY kit, in warm and cold water it is at least 5 points out! Any advice? (Apart from sending it to Manly Vale, although that might be an option)
TonyW
My glass Stevenson Reeves shows 0 in water, my plastic coopers one gives me - a couple of points this is maybe why people with are getting 1.036 in an OG using the plastic and i am getting 1.040 with my glass one. ShakeyD
Gravity with water is .
TonyW
Gravity with water is .995 My glass one just now read 1000 my coopers one read .997 But my brew returned using the glass one 1.012 for the second day taking my reading as soon as its out of the FV so i am going to bottle up 1 litre then dry hop with pellets and leave the rest for another week so i will be able to do a taste test, non hopped and hopped. The beer at the moment is a little bland as to be expected and will improve with some conditioning in the bottle, its not overly heady and left some nice lace down the side of the test tube. Warm beer and a hangover , its never going to taste good
weggl
Allan, I am thankful, for the dog's sake. And to put my mind at rest, I was having delusions about you blokes getting "PLASTIC HYDROMETERS" and I was missing out. I am having second thoughts about the bloody things, seems they are off in the readings and they WARP[pinched] [pouty] [devil] Shakey, depends on what is in your water and the temp.[crying] Weggl
TonyW
Melbourne water is up there with the best apparently and its returns 1.000 when tested so its pretty bang on. Even if he tested his beer at say 13C it would only be approx maginally out out. I just did a 5litre jug of reconstituted no preservative grape juice with 200grams of dextrose OG 1.075 and i used a Brigalow crap yeast and no controlled heating. 2 weeks to the day and i just got a reading of 1.000 and the Coopers was all over the place with different readings, so it seems my Stevenson Reeves hydrometer works much more accurate than the plastic one in the Coopers kits which seem to be all over the shop. By the way the grape wine is very morish 11.5% AV even though its still immature and has been racked to a 2 litre cider jug and some pint bottles to stand for awhile..
