What beer were your parents or grandparents or you drinking back in the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's?

I came across this book in an Op shop years ago for about 2 bucks, printed in 1994 showcasing the beers around that era & beyond, it is a mixture of history, facts & jokes ( some a bit crass, funny, unfunny etc ) but it is still a step back into time, most of the Beers & Breweries all over Australia get a mention & it is really quite interesting. The ratings are a bit harsh & questionably not by a qualified person however it is still within the boundaries of this topic.

Cheers.

Thread bump.

I got the Coopers email this morning announcing their Coopers Lager launch (deja vu, all over again?). It got me thinking, now it's torturing me.....

It was the mid 80s and I was living in Melbourne at the time (Adelaide now).  A licensed grocer in nearby Laverton stocked a Coopers 375ml stubby branded "Adelaide <something>'. It was a crisp, bright beer in the style of a pils/helles. It's taste wasn't a million miles removed from Steinlager Classic (whatever happened to that?). I loved it, but as with many Coopers brands, it came and went - around the late 80s IIRC.  It was never available in tallies, stubbies only, and was quite hard to find.  A bit of a niche dweller, really, and probably didn't appeal much to the palates of those times.

Can anyone name the culprit and put me out of my misery?

Born in regional Victoria, I remember as a toddler in the late 60s a lot of Foster's Lager long necks and steel cans being drank by my dad and uncles. The cans had to be opened with one of the pictured openers. No ring pulls in those days.

Then we moved to Adelaide in 1973 and Southwark Bitter was all the rage. By the time I started drinking in the 80s I think my go-to beer was West End Export.

I remember those, make a big notch in the pouring side and a small notch on the opposite side to help with the flow.

It was CUB, mainly longnecks but I do remember the white, steel Carlton Draught Cans. My uncle was big on Fosters, and I recall my great uncle drinking Abbotsford Invalid Stout, maybe in a black & tan. He used to work as a delivery driver for CUB. My cousin was telling some stories a few years ago about how the occasional full keg would go "missing."

No. What era?

I do remember when the 250ml bottles came out, known colloquially as hand grenades, in the late 80's/early 90's. They were good in Summer, the beer didn't warm up so much. It was before the neoprene stubby holders really took off.

I think I know the one you mean but I can't seem to find it but here's a few old ones.

There were of course a few beers with the name 'Adelaide by the (now closed) SA Brewing.

Gotta love those old beer labels. That's what I like about Coopers labels they haven't strayed too far away from old school.

I have several in my collection, mainly Fosters, VB, West End etc.

This opener which I picked up in Manila about 15 years ago has that fitting plus another one for, I assume, cutting the whole lid off.

Yeah, remember them well.  Also came in the Abbot's and Carlton Draught 'styles', lol.
IIRC, they were the early adopters of aluminium, as opposed to the heavier 'tin'.  Those were (among) the early innovations following the abolition of minimum pricing for for beer in Victoria, ~circa early 80s?
Immediately following abolition,  there was a retail bottle shop in High St, Windsor flogging 12/750ml longnecks of VB for about $15.  Dan's in Prahran dropped their price too, and it was game on.

Some people would argue that a carton of VB is still only worth about that!

The fountain of beer memory is overflowing once again; but no-one has been able to answer @FusterCluck's question about the mystery Coopers beer from the mid 80's which he remembers!

Sadly, so it seems.

But I know this much: somebody, somewhere, knows the precise answer (probably someone @Coopers).

Late 80s to early 90s remember a lot of West End Draught and Export. Old man moved onto VB, Carlton etc. A lot of Adelaideans get nostalgic about West End but TBH it's pretty bad. Had my share of red tins when they were cheap but looking back they're av. Plenty of beers to choose from at same price nowdays.

Pretty sure Dad was Melbourne Bitter. He did home brew for a while and then several years of Fosters (who knows what happened there).

In the end it was whatever was on special.

I started on Bourbon, never beer. I hated it. Went to WA and was convinced to try Emu Export. Loved it. Even took a carton back to Vic.

Been a beer drinker since then.

My Dad was always a Crown Larger guy in the day.

In my youth it was Carlton Cold season, such a big brand for about 5 minutes.

My mates like Vitamin B (Vic Bitter) I was never big on it. There was a pub brewery in my home town called the Rifle brigade and they did great home brews in the 90s. a nice stout, a pilsner and one called Bullion that was a full flavour.
