Social club game today at a rather wet and soggy carbrook. This course went completely under in the recent floods and still hasn't dried out properly. The greens were pretty slow as well which made putting more difficult. Chunked a fair few irons due to the soft ground and also most of them were about 10 metres shorter than my usual distance, but still managed to post a respectable score. My swing felt a bit more in sync today, getting more used to the minor changes made in my last lesson 👍

Wednesday: Couldn't decide if I should play or not.  Ankle was hurting before I left home. Didn't want to stay home so played and it didn't work. Swinging on one leg for most of the shots. Finished with 20 points.

Saturday: Felt good in the morning, so played, Stroke round. Started steady and kept it up most of the day except for two holes, 8 & 9.

Dog leg right on the 14th, index 1, pushed my drive straight and into the trees. There was a gap but had to play low, 3 iron, picked it clean and the best I've ever hit that club, rocketed over the slight rise and down to the green, couldn't see the finish but found it on the green, 15 feet to the flag and I THREE putted!

Finished with a 77 wasn't too unhappy with that, still playing mostly off one leg.

See Specialist tomorrow.

My social club game was canned today, unfortunately none of us actually knew until we got there. So I rang the pro shop at my club and got a spot in the comp, then went home and watched the Masters before heading down.

Played ok, didn't really feel like I was hitting it great but my short game and putting prevented blowout holes. Ended up with the win too which was nice, and cap down to 14.2

Cheers guys, yeah it's pretty good now, there's a few bare patches where it flooded on fairways, and the rough is still longer than usual because of this incessant bloody rain keeping things a bit boggy in there, but otherwise it's in good condition.

Yeah happy with the cap coming down, I have three rounds and a lesson next weekend so hopefully will get it down a bit more then

Now that picking has finished on the vineyard I got a round in on Saturday. Bought a new driver and was trialling a different 3 wood. It was a stableford round, finished with 31 points.  Not disappointed with that, given it was my first hit in a month and 2 new clubs. To add to the equation I also tried a different ball that the guy in the golf shop thought would suit my game. 🤨 Handicap still on 13.

Which ball did he suggest?

Taylor Made Soft Response. I will admit I haven't looked at Taylor Made balls much in the past. It felt good off the club but it also felt like it "sprang" off the putter face too. I  sent a few putts further past the hole than I was comfortable with.

I use a yellow ball too and these balls are a matte yellow which just added another level of difference to the day.

How's the leg going David, did you play this week?

My new 3 wood is a weapon, so easy to hit. I like the lower profile, it doesn't give the visual of towering over the ball when hitting off the ground which gives me confidence. Just need to dial in the radar with it. Given the loft setting it's on it's probably more like a 4 wood but I get good distance with it and if I start spraying the driver a bit I'll usually revert to it off the tee.

As for balls I'm still using the TP5/TP5x in the pix version. Which one I get depends which one of them is available in pix when I go buy them. Only minor issue I have with them occasionally is getting too much spin on chips and little pitches close to the green, when I want a bit of run out and it just stops dead.

I was given a 2nd hand Taylor Made 3 wood to try.  It has an "Arthritis" grip which is larger than standard.  I actually found it comfortable to use.

I agree, if the head towers over the ball I used to tend hit down on the ball and "chunk" it.

I prefer a slightly larger grip as well, the narrow ones I feel like I have to grip it too tight or I'll lose control of the club. My irons are like that but could be due to wear from use. I'd get them replaced but I'm planning on new irons in a few months anyway so not much point really.

I tried a sim2 wood when I was trying them out with my coach, for whatever reason I didn't hit it very well, or the Callaway one. Ended up with a Titleist TSi3.

I do have TaylorMade wedges though, they're the hi toe raw ones, second hand. My coach gave them to me to try for a few rounds in January and I decided to buy them. Nice to have a matching set. I absolutely knifed the 54° out of the rough today and thought it'd gone over the back but somehow managed to get enough spin on it to stop it on the front of the green pin high, totally ridiculous but I like it 😂

Great ball, sadly out of my price range, the way I'm losing balls right now, I'll stick with the Srixon Z star.

Had the visit to the Specialist, I think he gave me an honest assessment.

"I like to preform surgeries but I don't think there is enough damage to operate on in your case."

He want's me to try Orthotics, that will be next week.

Locked up with Covid till Wednesday.

I've used soft balls in the past but they feel like hitting marshmallows, and I wasn't impressed with the lack of control in the short game, the cover material doesn't provide enough spin, and they tend to bounce and take off rather than check up.

One day I was playing a round at Royal Pines and I hit one into the water, grabbed a random TP5x out of the bag that I'd probably found somewhere in a previous round for the drop, and never looked back. I prefer to use the same ball all the time as I'm used to them, I will pick up ProV1s as spares if I find them but anything else I usually throw it back on the ground.

It does help that I don't lose them as often as I used to, I did hit one out of bounds yesterday but I probably play more rounds without losing the ball now. I bought a new box last week, I'll have to keep an eye on how long it takes to lose them all, but at a guess I probably buy maybe 5-6 boxes a year, which isn't too bad for somewhere between 70-90 rounds per year.

by ball of choice is the chrome soft   either the triple trek or just plain chrome soft  , i have found these balls not scuff up  when they check  up   and very durable for a soft ball.   i like how these check up when using wedges and short irons and you want the ball to stop on the dime   .

ProV1 mate love how they check up but a very hard ball to control spin wise specially with the big dog  and then milli vanilli slice turns up for me

Titileist AVX   is 2nd option  to the chrome soft  these provide me with everything i need from tee to green when cant get my callaway chrome softs

bridgestone e6's  use to love these years ago  this was great distance ball that would also check up  , the only issue i had with this ball  it had a great tendency to fade even when just hitting a straight shot..

however i just got 2 boxes  of chrome softs from my winnings  at the pro shop    so they will last me..

i have tried the odd taylormade  balls wilson staff etc  just never really liked them

I've got 20 of these to play with soon, hanging on for a bit as have been too Wild and losing too many balls.

Ball is worth a few shots over a game, if it fit's your game, we all should find the one that works for us.

I have been using Chrome Soft & occasionally Srixon Q Star for a while now and find they have suited my game. I will give these Taylor Made ones a go for a while, a ball usually lasts a couple of months so I am stocked up until next year now.

My God

A few rounds and mine (if not over a fence or in a lake) are marked from hitting trees and paths, cut from the the irons, not fit to play in general.

Three rounds Tops😟

When these balls came onto the market  i rang titleist up and found the customerservice pretty poor and the next day the ceo rang me
and had a good discusion and said you shouldnt have been treated in that way  recieved 2 boxes of AVX's and a hat in the mail
and free club fitting when ever i wanted on titleist  ..

having said that the ball is  mid flighted ball  but is long and will get you run on your drives

but i have stuck with the chromesofts   for awhile now

but the sad thing is  my lost balls always find there way home.   sitting around  having a beer  i can sure tell you 1 or 2 blokes or even the ladies will put a golf ball  right in front of not say a word  and sure enough its my golf ball that i lost during the round

I have played 13 holes with the AVX, it was given to me to try.

Liked it, seemed to have a bit of extra distance, good spin around the green.

Unfortunately, the fourteenth hole, dogleg right, I hit my shot way right, across the road and onto the Roof of a House.

Was scoring well up to that point, was it the ball.. who knows but I will play with them again soon.

Chrome soft aren't bad but when I say soft I mean the really soft ones like supersoft or those Bridgestone E6 or whatever they are. Chrome soft sorta sits in the middle of those and the firm ones like ProV1, but yeah any of those premium options will have better spin and control around the green than the cheap balls. The TP5/X and the decent set of wedges I have now have combined to help improve my short game. It was ok before with my mish mash of different wedges but I'm making more up and downs recently since I got the current set, which I think is better suited to me anyway which helps.

I hear you about the spin with the long clubs, I used to be a bit wary of switching for the same reason but I can power cut a less spinny ball just as badly anyway, and not that I've tested it but now that I'm learning and getting better at deliberately shaping shots I suspect it's probably easier to do with the premo balls. Now I just have to upgrade my irons away from the game improvement ones that make shaping more difficult, waiting for tax time for that 👍

Played in the white tees comp today. Didn't really play that well on the front or back although was better on the back. Short game was absolutely rubbish as was my putting. I did land a few nice approaches though including one on this pictured hole to about 3-4 feet.

Had a chat to my coach after the round about changing the shaft in my driver, he's thinking it needs to be a stiffer flex than the current one which was my hunch after using the wood for a few rounds which does have a stiff flex in it, and I can hit it a lot straighter. I used it on most tee shots today with pretty good effect.

Got a lesson on Sunday morning before a round, plus another round on Monday

Here's Otto ho-humming an 87. I'd be delirious with an 87. The only course I've ever broken 90 on is North Adelaide north course, which is only a par 68. My best on a par 72 was a 92. A rare feat for me. Most of my scores were around the 100-120 mark when I played regularly.

I'm just a competitive bugger 🤣 9-12 months ago I would have been happy with an 87, but since I've progressed further with my lessons I know I am capable of better. I'm probably capable of breaking 80 if I could iron out a few things, most of which are probably mental rather than physical. For example sometimes I'll hit bad slices because I get this idea that if I swing properly I'll pull it left, and I end up just getting in my own way and not turning through the downswing properly. It's absolutely ridiculous and the swing feels terrible when I do it; I am getting better at not thinking that way but it does creep in at times.

At this point low-mid 80s is a par round for me, anything higher I haven't had a great round. Over 90 these days and I've played like absolute trash. 8 out of my last 10 rounds have been sub 90, 9-12 months ago it'd be lucky if it was 2 or 3 out of 10. I'm tracking well on my quest to get my handicap to 9 by the end of this year, and I'm pretty determined to get there.
