ozdevil
hey all I think i stuffed up i think i brought the wrong size beaker for doing yeast starters i brought a 5 litre beaker and its massive as i plan to soon move in to liquid yeasts and to do a few yeast starters should i have just gone with the 3 litre beaker for easy managing as this will sit on a wort whipper yeast stirrer i do plan on getting a 3l beaker but just wondering if 5l is way to big
kmar92
@ozdevil I use a 3l Erlenmeyer flask and find it a good size for starters. I have never used a 5l flask so can't really comment on it, however knowing the physical size of 3l I would agree that the 5l must be huge.

Hairy
I have a 2 litre Erlenmeyer flask. Perfect for most of my standard gravity ales. It gives me 500ml for a jar in the fridge and the rest for pitching in the beer. A 3 litre flask would have been more versatile and used for bigger beers and lager yeast. A 5 litre flask would be way too big for me.
Journeyman
Nah, you just need about 6 - 8 small jars like this and you make 1 BIG batch & split it up for the next 6 brews or so.

I have a 1L and a 3L. I wish I got a 3L and 5L. 3L is good for ales doing 1.5L or so starters but for me too small for lagers where you want to be pitching as much yeast as you can get.
ozdevil
i suppose when i look at this i have a bit of versitality where i can make bigger starters as @Greeny1525229549 stated and can make good starter for 3litre batches i still think i may get a 3l as the 5l is a huge beaker
RDT2
I have a 2 litre flask, wish I had bought the 3 litre or 5 litre but I got around that by making a 1.5 litre starter for my Pilsner then used the yeast cake from my Pilsner for the Baltic Porter destroyed the Porter wort with a very healthy ferment 3 or 5 would be handy for ottos yeast harvest process though. Shamus O'Sean
I agree on the use of a 5 litre from time to time. I have a 1 litre and a 3 litre Erlenmeyer flask. Only ever used the 3 litre. Although the second last time I used it, I did a 2.3 litre starter with Lallemand Verdant IPA yeast. I actually had a minor overflow of the Krausen from the flask. So a 5 litre Erlenmeyer flask would have been handy. I am in the process of doing a 2.3 litre starter with WLP840 American Lager yeast and it never looked like overflowing. I actually have to step the WLP840 up again in a 2.7 litre starter to get enough yeast for my 32 litre batch, plus an overbuild to harvest for next time.

Otto Von Blotto
I have a 2 litre and 5 litre flask. Smaller one for standard ales, bigger one for lagers or big ales. Whenever I actually get around to brewing another batch, every time I get a free weekend day something else pops up.
