Who of you guys buy base malts in 25kg sacks, and if you do, where do you buy them?

Freight of course is a killer with such weights so I guess that you try and buy as local as possible.

i look at house of malt   - i get discount there as the owner is part of the brew club im involved in

most of the time i just go through beerco and just buy the required amount of grains i need for a particular brew
as i dont have room to store lots of grain

I buy 25kg bags from Hoppy Days here in Brissy. They're about 45km on the other side of town but freight is reasonable and quick. I recently ordered something like 35kg of grain all up and other odds and sods and freight was $20. When I drive there, I already pay about $15 in tolls.

I buy 25kg sacks of base grain. Sometimes local but usually from BeerCo in Melbourne. I get it delivered to Sydney and freight was a flat rate of $10 (although I think my last order a few weeks ago was $15). I make the most of the flat rate and order some 5kg bags of Munich and Wheat plus hops etc. Sometimes I will see if anyone want to split a bag.

I usually receive it within 2 days.

Buy mine at the local country brewer these days. Prices are a touch higher than the others around but seeing as it's 5 mins drive away if I factored in petrol and time or cost of freight it's no different. He stocks joe white, Simpson's and gladfield.  Joe white reasonable at 66 a sack. Gladfield 79 and Simpson's MO like 100.

I buy 25kg sacks locally and smaller amounts and hops online. Sometimes things run out all at once and I'll do an online bulk order with a mate to dilute the costs.

A Country Brewer is my LHBS. It's a bit more expensive but they are pretty helpful and I try to support local when I can.

As all of you know I only do Extract with additions of steeped grain & hops & of course experiment with different yeasts & as far as I am concerned I am getting all that I want from beer.

After reading the above posts on bulk grain availability in certain areas, I have come to realise if I was an AG brewer I would be totally spoilt as there are 7-8 locations all within a 30 -45 minute or less drive who all handle 25gm bags of grain, malt & bulk hops. Some of the LHBS specialise in AG brewing supplies, so if I took the plunge it wouldn't be very hard to find whatever I needed including equipment.

So my never ending quest to enter AG or Kegging will continue. I also realise some of you in outer suburbs & regional areas don't find it so easily but it was only meant to be an observation.

Cheers

Phil
