Carbonation lid effect

I recently put 2 kegs in & needed them real soon now. So I put them on 30 psi - on one I used my carb cap, a lid with a post in it that has some line and an airstone that hangs near the bottom of the keg. On the other I made up a line from the manifold with a beer disconnect on it and plugged that onto the beer out post of the other keg.

The line to the beer out worked perfectly, the carb cap version was significantly over-carbed!

Similar beers (as in not a lager and a stout etc., both ales that I've made before) and literally identical gas situation.

The only thing I can think of is that the airstone provides much finer bubbles which get absorbed much more easily so the beer was carbed after maybe 12 hours.

Anyone else use carb lids at all? Have you noticed this effect?
