Green Neck Lager

Hi there guys.

I made a box recipe of the green neck lager last night.

after 15 hours there seems to be no activity in the air lock.

I have it in the fridge at 15 degrees.

I pitched the yeast at 20 degrees.

I used the can yeast.

should I put another one in there,

or should I wait

As Lab Rat said don't use an airlock to determine if the brew is fermenting. Put some tape over the hole and leave the lid a bit loose. It can take a few days for the yeast to start doing its thing so I would leave it alone unmolested. 😃

If there is condensation it will be fermenting. Lager yeasts brewed cold are slower and will appear to start slowly. If the can is fresh (check used by date on bottom) it will be fermenting unless the yeast was stored incorrectly (higher temps). I would be patient and check after 48 hrs. if no krausen is visible, take a hydrometer reading.

If you pitched at 20 degrees and fridge is on 15 it wouldn't take long to come down to 15 from my experience or close enough. with only a 7 gram packet of kit yeast you wouldn't want to go very low anyway as lagers like a bit more yeast. I have brewed a few on 15 degrees with 14 grams 2 coopers kit yeast or one 11.5 grams from local brew shop. when I eventually go down to 12 degrees ill use 2 packs of 11.5 grams. it won't be what you expected at start but if you like lagers buy more yeast then worry about temp going below 15 atm I.dont have patience to wait 2 weeks for finished ferment but down track it makes better beer.
