Bingilbeer
Hi all, When using grains in your brew is there a ratio of grains used to the size of the brew? I am looking to brew Pale Ales and the like. cheers in advance for any info.
ben 10
What type of grains Bingil and how do you propose to use them? Some crystal for extra body could be in the order of 250g, if you are looking to replace some of the malt extract then you'd be looking at 1 to 2 kilos of pale type malt. Bingilbeer
Hi Ben 10, looking to move away from malt extracts altogether and move into grains and hops. As for grains I was just going to look at what’s available online, other recipes, what other people use for the brews I like and I suppose just trial and error. I wasn’t sure if there is a ratio or not when using grains to wort size. As for using the grains I gather you boil the grain for a certain amount of time as this would be the first step in the whole brewing process. You mash the grains first (i.e. soak them) before removing the grain and boiling the wort. If you are going down that path I recommend you do some research on All Grain brewing. Perhaps read John Palmer's How to Brew for information. You will find it hard to pick up everything you need to know solely from forum posts. Marty_G
Need to down load som software to help with recipe building. I use BrewMate v2.1 it is free and easy to use. Will give you the vital numbers you need like OG expected FG amount of water needed. How bitter it will be with the hops you use. All the key stuff you need. Hi mate, I am more than happy to help. I guess you need to look at some equipment? I use a crown urn, but a grainfather (or similar) may be a better bet for you? There is a homebrew shop in Kuranda that has some good stuff (grainfather) as well as hops and grain. I don't know if there is anything in Innisfail? I am happy to help. Hi Ben10, I have looked at the grainfather but not looking to go that deep financially yet. looks like I will have to buy some more equipment. I have an outdoor burner plus a stainless steel pot that does about 8L, so that may not be big enough to do I think. I gather you use an electric urn? Seems like a lot easier idea than a pot and probably cheaper to buy as well.

What would be the pieces of equipment you must have if you wanted to start doing all grain/ hops beers. That is using a 23L FV from coopers. ben 10
Annnd, Colin at Kuranda has a good grain selection, and twice a year we do a bulk buy through Rob @ Macallisters. You will need a grain mill.
