Ally1525230277
Hi all, I generally brew the 23l batches but have ordered the ROTM 8.5l recipe kit. Can this be brewed in the 23l fermenter? I don’t think coopers sell the 8.5l fermenter on its own (just the starter kit) it’s just the collar I can see in the store. thanks.

Ally1525230277
Thanks Seamus, just wasn’t sure about the amount of gap and if it would cause any problems, cheers

EWildcat7
I am glad you posed this question - I want to double a 8.5L recipe and I was curious if I could use the 23L fermenter or if I had to use the 8.5L fermenter twice.

Seamus says ok for a 8.5l batch so I suppose no problem for a double batch. Bit pricey though if you are buying the coopers ROTM recipe kit

Otto Von Blotto
You don't have to use specific fermenters for specific kits... you can put wort into any container that will hold it and ferment it. So yes, you can put the ingredients for two small recipes into a larger vessel and make a double sized batch. What reason would there be not to?

I have hard that there can be issues (I don't know what kind of issues) if there is too much head space in the fermenter.
Ally1525230277
Same here, I heard or read that if there is too much gap then too much oxygen. But the general consensus seems that it will be ok. Mine will be on as soon as it arrives.
EWildcat7
If I am doubling a recipe, do I double ALL of the ingredients, including using 2 yeast packets? I am assuming so, but wanted to double check.
Naughty Corner Brewing
Depends on the gravity and the style and how much yeast there is, but generally the answer would be yes. For lagers the answer would be a definite yes. For ales, probably but it would depend on how much yeast is in the pack. For example if you had just the two craft kits with a small amount of extra fermentables and the recipe said a pack of us-05 I’d think it would be ok. On the other hand if you were just using the kit yeasts, I’d bung them both in. Hope that helps.

I am making the Nilla Porter recipe, so it will have brown sugar and vanilla extract as well Edited October 19, 2019 by EWildcat7

I’d definitely be using the 2 though.
