Aussiekraut
After a few weeks of absence, I've restarted the brewery again on the weekend. The Irish Red I put down on Friday is happily bubbling away and is homing in on 1010 SG but the "86 Day Pils" from Saturday is doing tiddlysquad. It's a straight forward K+K, I even used the kit yeast (rehydrated) as I didn't have any lager yeast on hand. There is a decent yeast cake at the bottom of the fermenter but absolutely zero activity. No bubbles on the surface, not the slightest movement in the airlock. The same goes for the bench sample. It sits there, around 1040SG and has been doing so since Saturday afternoon. Is the yeast dead? Should I re-pitch? Tip it out? I've seen beer start late but 3 days doesn't sit right with me.
Otto Von Blotto
I'd get more yeast into it or take another sample first and see if the brew actually in the fermenter has moved. If not, pitch more yeast.
Shamus O'Sean
Pretty sure the "86 Days Pils" is a lager yeast. It should still work at ambient temperature though. But might give some unusual flavours. Was the kit in date? Like Otto says, throw some more yeast at it and cross your fingers
Aussiekraut
Aight, got myself some more yeast earlier. Will take another sample when I get home and then pitch more if necessary. No Idea re the kit date. Just picked it up at the LHBS on Thursday.
Shamus O'Sean
If you paid full price, it should be in date. My LHBS discounts the kit cans if they go out of date. Sometimes they throw in a new yeast.
