You need to tell us all about the fermentation process and how it is packaged etc. No one will be able to help you without that information. scouser
Thanks for the response. I'm really green at this It was a 23 litre can to which I was advise to add 1kg Coopers #1 Brew enhancer. I let it ferment for two weeks then bottled it with 2 carbonating drops per 740mm. It then stood for two weeks before I put them in the fridge yesterday. Sampled it today. Very clear but head disappears in seconds. .
Otto Von Blotto
So is it flat or just not holding a head? Does it taste fizzy?

Suggest leaving the bottles at room temp for another week or two.
Gus96
I have had similar expeariances with Morgans Kits, back in the 90's and two years ago when i started brewing again. So much so i vowed never to use them again. Some flat, some no head retention. i would leave the bottles in the fridge for a min 3 days before opening them (after 1 month maturing at ambient) it helped but never turned out anywhere as good as Coopers Kits. i could never work out why they were crap as i did everthing the same as Coopers. Shamus O'Sean
I have only done 1 Morgans kit. See photo. Head formation appears fine and stays for a long time.
scouser
Thanks for all your replies fellers. I have only used Morgans once. Wont do it again. I have used coopers twice (amber) in smaller batches. I enjoyed the taste but I bought a larger fermenting container and this was my first attempt at a larger batch. I have Coopers English Bitter on the go now, added 500 g coopers Light Dry Malt.. Fingers crossed. I had a similar problem with my first two attempts. The head not holding, but not as bad as the Morgans. Otto, it is showing signs of sparkling but doesn't taste much. Thanks again, I will take them out of the fridge and stand them at room temp. (around 25C ) again for a week or so.
Otto Von Blotto
It possibly needs more time to carbonate further, just be aware that carbonation and head retention aren't the same. You can't really have retention without some carbonation but you can have carbonation and no head retention. I have two beers on tap at the moment that are fully carbonated but neither holds a head for more than a minute. I'm 95% sure it's the glasses but the beers themselves may be playing a part too; I wash the glasses in the dishwasher and they come out brilliant but I'm suspecting that the detergent isn't being completely rinsed off. I did a hot water rinse on a couple of them last week and the retention was improved a bit. It still disappeared about halfway through the glass but better than a minute after pouring.
scouser
Thanks Otto, I know my glasses are safe, I wash them myself by hand. Hot water only. Like I said I have taken them out of the fridge and will leave them for another week.. Will let you know if they turn out any better. Cheers. Otto Von Blotto
It could simply be that the recipe for that beer doesn't lend itself well to good head retention. Typical lager beers on tap in pubs wouldn't hold a head if they didn't use additives in them to promote retention because there's bugger all malt and hops in them. It seems like those are the style it's similar to.

scouser
Oh no. I wont give up. I've had reasonable success with a couple of Coopers Brews. Just put together today a Coopers Devils Half Ruby Porter. We'll see how that goes. Thanks for your interest.

scouser
Probably. Just wasn't right. Flat, not much taste. Not worth keeping. Thanks for your interest.
James Lao
Probably would be better for head retention to use all dry malt - no brew enhancer and maybe put some hops in the brew either as a steep or dry hop. Also the glass can affect the appearance of fizz / lacing. By the way mate - Red or Blue? Cheers James
