What is the fenced off area for?

Four legged lawnmowers?

Not far off.  It was a pool fence for a small above ground pool that has long been retired.  Now it is my vege patch with rabbit proof fence.

Gotta say it is a cemetery of a type with our 21 year old moggy Tabitha in there somewhere.

Coopers DIY recipe: Chubby Cherub

ChubbyCherub_Empty.jpg

...sorry, nothing left in the glass. 10 days further along in the keg...it is drinking much better. Better carbonation & integration of hop & malt flavours. Delicious! 😎

Even Brian Johnson thought so. 😉

For those that brew from an extract base & like hop forward beers, if you haven't brewed this Coopers DIY recipe yet, you're really missing out.

Cheers,

Lusty.

I’m trying really hard to like this beer. The red rattler. I don’t know if I did something wrong or what but it is just awful. A bit of apple comes through which is really disappointing and ruins it. I’ve left it in the keg for 3 months. I’m just gonna tip it. I need the keg any way.

My Black IPA. Only a week in the bottle but had them wrapped in blankets and hot water bottle. The week has been mid 20’s here in Perth during the day. Last two days have dipped so perfect dark beer evening

she is tasting beautiful. Dark, hoppy, dank, aromatic, right amount of bitterness. Would highly recommend this style

Yep @Worthog, the Really Secret Ale is a ripper.  I think that the use of hops at key stages has created a robust but very well balanced beer.

Gold Shamus - reckon that was a cool idea doing the split finish and two different brews... great stuff.

I have done something a little like that in my latest - but used different yeast as well as different late hopping regime... so might be doubly bizarre differences!?!

Will see how it goes.  But in the meantime - that RSA is a beauty mate.  Cheers. BB

PS when you did the dry hopping Shamus - how long did you leave them in for mate?  Ta.

I used colombus which gives it a lot of pine. My stoner mate had a glass of it last night and compared the aroma to cannabis. I didn’t know if I was to be offended or charmed.

I reckon that is pretty interesting Paddy...  you do know that they are both in the same Plant Family don't you mate?

i.e. Plant Kingdom classification--> Phylum - Class - Order - Family - Genus - Species... these suckers are pretty close mates really...

Cannabaceae is a small family of flowering plants. Family includes about 170 species grouped in about 11 genera, including Cannabis (hemp, marijuana), Humulus (hops) and Celtis (hackberries). Celtis is by far the largest genus, containing about 100 species.

Cannabaceae is of the rose order (Rosales). Members of the family are erect or climbing plants with petalless flowers and dry, one-seeded fruits. Hemp (Cannabis) and hop (Humulus) are the only economically important species.

You might be able to bring back some Celtic Hackberries for us to try in the next brew?!?    ; )

Just make sure you declare them at customs at Perth International mate so they don't throw you in the Freo Prison 😋

Hey BB2, I typically dry hop for only three days.  Wrap them in a no-name Chux cloth equivalent.  Weigh them down a bit with a shot glass, also wrapped inside the cloth.  After three days, don powder-free food handling gloves doused in starsan, fish out the hop cloths (which end up floating anyway) and give them a good squeeze to optimise the hop aroma in the beer.

I did a few early brews where I dry hopped for 3-5 days plus 5-6 days cold crash and got some grassy flavours.  Hence, now the three day plus squeeze regime.

I'm not sure where you're getting the pine from with this hop, maybe a lemony citrus trait? I find aromatically it throws a citrusy/berry aroma (IMHO).

Your stoner mate has NFI what he is doing, let alone saying most of the time.

Best not to listen to the advice of stoners I find. Particularly when they are at the peak of their powers & stoned out of their mind as you'll likely hear rhetoric rivalling the BS reality you'll read & hear in all the Murdoch press around the world on a daily basis, & that is saying something. I've often wondered whether Rupert Murdock rose from just being a college class president stoner that just too many other stoners listened to & promoted, to get to where he has gotten to today. That theory would explain a lot of things. LOL

IMHO, stoners predominantly belong in their grandmother's attic or cellar quietly going about their business, puffing away, preserving plant life, & discussing all the major problems of the world over the WWW with their co-stoner mates where they pose little danger to the rest of the realty living world. Then occasionally popping their heads up & socialising at family get-to-gethers & expressing their enlightening & often humorous views on the world to the rest of the non-stoner population. 🤣

Cheers,

Lusty.

I’ve only brewed one extract base beer but it turned out really good - much better than all my other brews - and I love hop forward beers - so was thinking about doing the Chubby Cherub recipe next.

But it’ll probably be a couple of months away as I go overseas for a few weeks soon.

Gold Shamus. Thanks mate. Good stuff. Yes I stuck to three days in my first go after some reading and discussion on her.  Glad I did so - as by the sounds of your experience with 3 days it was the biz. Coolio.

Thankee kindly. BB

You're welcome squire.

Definitely could dry hop for longer and quite a few do.  But for me three days does enough.

Cheers Shamus

I used a trio of colombus, Amarillo and centennial.  The latter two I have always found fruit. This beer I found more piney which I put down to the colombus. Maybe it’s a mixture of the 3 together

Haha Lusty. Good thing I gave up being a stoner years back or I'd be worried about really copping a hiding. Are your thoughts on ex-stoners the same?

Haha!

A "sneak-peak" tasting of my "HobGollum" brown ale inspired by the popular English beer Hobgoblin. It's a partial mash brew built on the Coopers OS dark ale can and dosed up with 50g late addition Styrian Golding hops.   Not surprisingly it tastes quite green and though I've used the dark ale tin a few times in the past I don't remember it being this strongly flavoured?   🤔  Anyway...   it clearly needs more time so I'll reserve final judgement 'til then!

Hobgollum-1.jpg

Going in for a second crack at this one this evening.  It's still a little shy of 3 weeks in the bottle but I have no choice...   it's the only beer anywhere near ready that I have on hand as all previous batches have now been fully depleted!  😮

I'm really liking this one now, just another 5 days has made all the difference and I imagine it will only continue to improve and will probably be at it's best long after it's all gone!   😁   The Dark Ale tin has certainly proven to be a good platform to build this particular beer on and I will certainly be revisiting this simple partial mash recipe again.
