Smashed Crabs
Hi all, Planning on putting down a lemon / lime lawnmower beer for the warmer months coming up and looking for some recommendations on brewing one. Will be a kits and bits since iv got so many tins sitting around and curious on the amounts of lemon / limes I would need to use to get a good flavor. Hairy
I have never brewed with lemon or lime but my preference would be to add juice to glass to give you more flexibility etc. If you are after a lemony type flavour then Sorachi Ace hops would go nicely in a lawnmower type beer. The Captain!!
Also if you use zest, try to get as little pith in as possible. Good luck with your brew. Captain
Smashed Crabs
Sweet, cheers for the ideas. I was tempted just to grab a few lemons / limes grab a fork, scratch the zests up then cut into quarters then throw it in during primary fermentation similar to like I did with my JAO Mead. Shamus O'Sean
Hi BZ - Links to a couple of recipes from the Coppers website with lemon, lime or grapefruit ingredients. I have done the Zesty Blonde and really loved it. Grapefruit zest came through in the taste. Not as strong as a slice in the neck of the bottle, but not negligible either. Smashed Crabs
Cheers Shamus, judging from those recipes and Ben10s advice zest defiantly seems the way to go, another question will the flavors fade as they age like hops ? are they best drunk earlier ? Cheers
Shamus O'Sean
With the Zesty Blonde I probably took three months to get through the batch. Didn't really notice a reduction in the zest taste.
Hairy
Is it a Radler if you are only using zest?

I tried this for the first time recently and was surprised at how lemony it was. If you were after that taste but didn't want to add fruit, Hairy's suggestion could work. Smashed Crabs
sweet, I'm guess it wont be a true radler but just a mere flavored beer LHBS doesn't have Sorachi hops but il keep a eye out for them for future brews.
ChristinaS1
I agree with Hairy about just adding a little squeeze of lemon or lime in the glass. But if you use zest, suggest cutting it off the lemon or lime by hand with a sharp knife in one long, thin strip (if you can manage), with as little of the white pith as possible (pith adds bitterness). That makes it easy to remove / fish out of the fermenter. Taste the beer every other day or so and, when it is at the level you want, remove it. Cheers, Christina.
