PaddyBrew2
Righto. I got the annual gold sub. It’s all downloaded on my laptop. What next is there an idiots guide to using it? are there must have add ons etc
Otto Von Blotto
I'd add the grains add on as a start. As for using it, you first have to input your equipment profile. This is obviously what equipment you're using but also all the losses to boil off, trub etc., batch volume and a couple of other things. Once you have that sorted you can create recipes with it that will turn out as intended.
tja1980
@PaddyBrew2 there are few videos that go about how to calculate losses from your equipment on youtube too including ones from Brad Smith too, just remember any changes you make to your equipment you will need to recalculate which is what I forgot to do. Otto Von Blotto
When I started I just worked it out myself over a few batches by measuring and recording figures. Tweaked it here and there and now have reliable figures to work with, giving me the desired outcome every time.
PaddyBrew2
So mainly I need to measure my losses over a 60 min boil over the next few batches.
Otto Von Blotto
Boil off is one of the losses. Others include grain absorption, loss to trub. If you do a dry run with just water you can get an approximate boil off figure, or you can do what I did and jump right in with no idea other than the process itself and work it out as you go. I use a crown urn, it boils off at around 3 litres per hour. Over the usual 75 minute boils I do I lose around 3.5-3.75 litres. Trub loss is about 4 litres, excess cube volume about 2 litres and loss to cube trub about 1.5 litres at a guess. It all adds up to approximately 11 litres, so that's how much more water I start with compared to the intended batch volume, e.g. for a 25 litre batch I start with around 36 litres of water. PaddyBrew2
that answers my other question on rudds thread also
Otto Von Blotto
I forgot to mention grain absorption but it is factored into the strike water volume as well. I aim for a pre boil volume 10 litres more than the batch size. That works on my system but yours may differ.
