Hoppy81
Hey All, I'm about to do my first AG brew in the next few weeks and just wanted some feedback on this very simple recipe, i think it's basically a SMASH. Are the rice hulls really needed? Any feedback is appreciated. Cheers, Hoppy
Otto Von Blotto
Looks alright to me mate. I don't think the rice hulls are necessary though. I've done plenty of 6kg+ grain bills without them and had no problems. I think they're more useful when using grains like rye that tend to clog stuff up more than barley does. Hoppy81
Thanks Otto. I was thinking of adding some light crystal, maybe 400g or should i just run with the MO?
Hairy
Definitely no need for rice hulls. A mash out will help with the sparge too. I have made plenty of beers with only MO and they were great. 200-300g light crystal would be fine too but it is up to what you want. Either will make a nice beer. Hoppy81
Thanks Hairy. I wasn't sure about the rice hulls but i was putting an online order in so for the extra few $'s i thought i'd grab some, but i'll leave them out. I'm thinking i'll just Leave the Crystal out this time so i can get a taste of these grains. Cheers, Hoppy
Hoppy81
I'm a little confused about the amount of water to be added, can someone give me a run down please? Do i add 18.08l of water @ 72°c add the grain and let mash for 60 minutes, then sparge with 29.89l of water then start the boil?
Otto Von Blotto
That's correct, yes. If you want to make it a bit easier you can mash in with 19 litres of water then sparge with 29 litres.

Beer Baron
Recipe looks good to me. Smash beers are great when starting out. Report back when tasting. I want to see how the Denali hops are!! Beer Baron
