Beer lowers death risk from brain injury - Is there anything beer can’t do?

New research suggests that people may be less likely to die following a brain injury if they have been drinking before the accident. Emergency doctors writing in the Archives of Surgery say their research suggests that those who have a bit of alcohol in their bloodstream have less brain damage and are less likely to die than those who are sober when they are injured.

Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, had noticed the link between alcohol and better brain injury outcomes after analyzing the medical records of more than 38,000 patients with moderate to severe head trauma. They speculate that alcohol may stop "secondary brain injury" by blunting the "catecholamine response," a series of chemical changes that causes brain swelling and further destruction of brain cells.

"The finding of reduced mortality in traumatic brain injury patients with pre-injury ethanol raises the intriguing possibility that administering ethanol to patients with brain injuries may improve outcome."

Chemical In Beer May Prevent Prostate Cancer

Forget growing that moustache, it seems that drinking beer will reduce the chances of men getting prostate cancer.

Tests have shown that xanthohumol, derived from the hops in beer, blocks a chemical reaction that can lead to the development of cancer.

The disease is usually treated with drugs that act in a similar way.

Study leader Dr Clarissa Gerhausa, from the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, said: "We hope that one day we can demonstrate that xanthohumol prevents prostate cancer development, first in animal models and then in humans, but we are just at the beginning."

Xanthohumol is a powerful antioxidant and is known to have anti-cancer properties.

It was previously suggested that the compound could reduce the chances of females getting breast cancer.

Beer For First Aid – Is There Anything Beer Can’t Do?

The swift recovery of a 65-year-old Australian man who sat down and drank six beers after a backyard accident that gave him burns to 40 per cent of his body, has led the three doctors who treated him to suggest that, in specific cases, beer ''might be safer'' than water in the rehydration of burns victims.

In a letter published in the Emergency Medicine Australasia , the three doctors describe how the man "believing the hospital to be closed, waited at home drinking six cans of beer with no other fluid intake before attending the emergency department 17 hours later."

People with burns to more than 20 per cent of their body require resuscitating fluid, and, in this case, the doctors estimated about seven litres as normal over the 17 hours after the accident. However, their patient had only two litres - all beer - yet was only mildly dehydrated.

This prompted the doctors to test the rehydrating capacity of beer against the oral rehydration solution recommended by the World Health Organisation, and some cola. The WHO solution came last, the cola did better, but the beer did best.

Been filling in on customer service / homebrew helpline over the last week. Don't ring tomorrow, I won't be there...

Anyway, the high number of seniors who make their own beer - many are 90+ - set me to wondering whether beermaking is linked to longevity??

Drinking Beer In Moderation Can Improve Longevity

You may well be right Paul. I've done some research and found the following:

Consensus currently amongst medical practitioners is that alcoholic consumption in moderation can contribute to the longevity of a person's life. Moderation is considered to be anything from 1-4 standard alcoholic drinks a day.

Here are a couple of examples among the oldest living people:

Born in Essen Germany in 1893, Herman Doernemann was a retired electrical engineer who claimed that a "daily dose of good dark beer keeps me feeling on top of the world."

As a boy, he worked in his father's saddlery, and he recalls his house being wired for electricity, when he was eight, back in 1901. He outlasted Kaiser Wilhelm, Hitler, and the Berlin Wall. He continued to walk to the store to get his beer until he was 100. Now it is brought to him. "As long as he gets his bottle of beer in the evening he is quite content," his daughter said.

Shigechiyo Izumi of Japan, lived for 120 years and 237 days. His favourite beverage was Shochu, an alcoholic drink distilled from barley.

Another advantage that beer does is lower labour rates. working for a slab is really common. A great way to show appreciation, like a lawn mower man, pool cleaner, gardner etc getting a slab for xmas from their clients, they get that little bit more when they are appreciated.

BEER HELPED TO LAND MAN ON THE MOON

May I quote the following from Gene Kranz's biography "Failure Is Not An Option". In the hectic race to the Moon in the early 1960's, Kranz and the other high techs of NASA would indulge in robust games of judo, wrestling and volley ball on the hard sand of the Cape Kennedy beaches, one can imagine, a neccesary aside to the very stressful nature of their job.

"The beverage of choice after these matches was Swan Lager, an Australian beer, and our supplier was Jack Dowling, the Australian government's envoy to NASA".

For many years, Swan Lager was the 'unofficial' NASA beer, and was brought forth on many momentous occaisions.

Now I can't get it at my local [crying] . Still I reckon if they took Coopers with them to the Moon, and set up a brewery, we'd still be there. Who would ever want to come back, with a view of good old planet Earth hanging over your back porch and a coldie in your hand [biggrin] .

BEER WAS WAGES FOR THE PEOPLE WHO BUILT THE PYRAMIDS

Sorry guys, I don't have the quote on hand, if I find the info I'll re-post.

It is well known that the ancient Egyptians were master brewers and liked a drop - alot. There craft was held high by the religious orders of the day, legend has it that the recipe for beer was delivered as a 'secret' by Thoth, the same god that brought the knowledge of fire to man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoth#Attributes

Anyhow, one can imagine that after a hard days labor hauling 2 1/2 ton blocks of stone a few hundred feet up the side of the great pyramid, (thirsty work I imagine), a bloke might look forward to something that salved the weary limbs and mind. A few songs around the fire, stories told, children playing, food on the cooker. And there, on the darkening horizon is this massive edifice, many of which still stand today, which you and your mates are building. Sure, the Pharaoh gets the credit, but the reality says it's your building - and his beer.

Beer Is Healthy and Help You Play Sport - Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

The news this week comes from two different sources.

The people at www.themedguru.com have completed some research that beer is one of the healthiest alcoholic drinks around, in moderation, of course.

The report revealed that beer actually has a low-calorie content compared to a number of other alcoholic drinks, as well as having a range of health benefits.

A spokeswoman said: "Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis."

Also in the news was that the English soccer team have beer to thank for their winning (so far) in the world cup. Apparently, coach Fabio Capello decided that the only way to get his team up and running was to allow them to have some of their favourite ale the night before the Slovenia game.

Perhaps if the Aussies had tried some of this good old fashioned advice our world cup challenge would have ended differently.

Beer reduces rheumatoid arthritis - Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

According to a new study, drinking alcohol may also ease the pain of, and lower the risk of developing, rheumatoid arthritis, a potentially crippling autoimmune disorder.

People who don't drink alcohol are roughly four times more likely to have rheumatoid arthritis than people who have at least one drink three or more days per week, the study found.

The researchers also found that rheumatoid arthritis patients who drink alcohol tend to have less severe symptoms than their nondrinking counterparts. And the more often they drink, the milder their symptoms are.

Beer Can Help You Lose Weight - Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

Swapping a daily glass of wine for a beer could help you save as many calories as you would by taking a 30-minute jog, a UK-based consumer group claims.

The consumer group Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) claimed today that beer's reputation for being fattening was unfounded.

"For years, beer has been blighted by a reputation for being more fattening than other alcoholic drinks, when in reality the exact opposite is true," beer expert Prof. Charlie Bamforth said.

"The major source of calories in any alcoholic drink is the alcohol itself, and because beer is the drinks category with the lowest average alcohol content, it is also lowest in calories - so for someone looking to lose weight, swapping their glass of wine for a beer every day would ... cut out more calories than are burned off during a typical 30-minute jog."

Stops Fruit Fly – Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

Scientists at Queensland University are turning brewery waste into an effective weapon against fruit flies. Apparently the fruit flies, who do millions of dollars worth of damage every year, love the proteins contained in the yeast left over from brewing. They lace the beer yeast with poison, and then spray a small amount on the fruit tree. The fruit flies can't help themselves from imbibing in this amber delicacy. The fruits grown are now poison and fruit fly free.

A cyclist in San Diego, USA, found out the hard way that beer could save your life. On Thursday evening, 14 October, he was riding home on his bike with beer in his backpack. According to the news report, ‘the cyclist was wearing a backpack of beer when he was hit and that likely helped absorb the fall, thereby saving the man's life.’

"The saving grace for him, he was wearing a backpack. He had a number of beverages within the backpack. It probably absorbed the impact," said Sgt. Art Doherty with San Diego police.

Beer Can Save You In An Avalanche - Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

Richard Kral is a man who owns his life to beer. He was on holidays at the Tatra mountains in Slovakia when an avalanche covered his Audi in snow. There was no way that he could dig his way out from under all that snow. Seeing his stockpile of beer in the back seat he came up with a plan.

He would drink the beer and pee on the snow to make it melt. Rescuers found him four days later on a mountain path.

He said, "It was hard and now my kidneys and liver hurt. But I'm glad the beer I took on holiday turned out to be useful and I managed to get out of there."

Beer Breakfast Saves Three From Fire - Is There Anything Beer Can't Do?

Andre Nash is a homeless Brooklyn man who lives on a park bench. One morning he had just bought himself some breakfast, two cans of beer, when he was found by a hysterical boy. The boy was begging for help and pointing to an 11th floor window that had smoke coming out of it.

Not caring about the loss of beer or even his life. Nash soaked a rag with his only beer, wrapped it around his face and ran into the building.

He managed to save a father and his two sons.
