So brewed a beer with a mate of mine 2 weeks ago who loves his IPA and craft beers like I do. He is also an artist who works in marketing/advertising. Over the brewing of the beer, we came up with an idea for a name of the beer. Few beers in and a story came from the name. Then his imagination got going and he turned up today to bottle with the following. Totally blown away!7 points

I don't have the most discerning palate but it turned out pretty well. It's been in the bottle for 5 weeks. I've probably made 4 or 5 APAs over the journey and this one has been the best of them. Whether that's due to the hop addition or the fact I reduced the malt and upped the dextrose, I don't know. Anyway, I know I can safely do this recipe again and should get a reasonable beer.7 points

Having a few beers while watching the footy. I think I deserve it after being married to my wife for 12 years today. It’s a simple pale ale with simcoe and galaxy hops. The simcoe is a bit stronger than I was aiming for. I was aiming to have to galaxy at the front and have the simcoe at the back. I’m not complaining because I love simcoe. There’s a bit of chill haze and the head retention is lacking considering there’s almost 10% wheat. It really doesn’t bother me too much though as it’s still a tasty drop!!6 points

Well put this down today. IanH spreadsheet calculated OG of 1.049. OG when tested with hydrometer was about 1.044 so a little off. I did slightly over fill the FV but not much. I then added another 150g of Dex and it brought the OG up to 1.047 so pitched the yeast and put it in the fridge. Will see how it goes I guess. I did have to use Morgans Unhopped Malt as the LHBS was out of Coopers. Not sure why the numbers were a bit out but hopefully tastes the goods in a few weeks4 points

I know a dairy farmer and he has music playing while his cows are being milked. He says it calms the cows and they produce more milk. I'm guessing ukulele does a similar thing for beer.3 points

Yeah if you know how to catch the chances of injury are minimal. Played 15 years mostly in the gully and slips. I found the gully the hardest position as it was often hard to see the ball off the bat especially if they were going hard at it. Only one injury in 15 years with a broken finger and that was on a low fingers down catch with the ball and my hands impacting the ground simultaneously. Really miss the game and the banter with the boys but we all get old unfortunately.3 points

Having a few fwk All Inn Mercenary Pales. I know its cheating but for 10 mins work plus bottling and $50 for 2 cartons it puts some so called craft beers to shame.3 points

Gold Mitchi. Come on Smithy. And whilst I have been pursuing the beautiful AG brew thing with all its benefits and challenges... am back drinking tonight on a very nice Coopers Toucan... Coopers Dark Ale Primary and a Coopers Lager boost... in 23L... rain water. The toucan is drinking very nicely and a real reminder how a good full malt (esp liquid malt) KnK can be... well played Coopers. Come on Aussie C'mon C'mon!2 points

I always found it quicker catching in both hands and throwing it because it's already in your throwing hand straight away, rather than having to pick it out of a glove first. I'm not saying there aren't tactics and whatever, but I find cricket different, to me there's more guile, intimidation/mind games, nuance and subtlety involved. At least in the longer form of the game anyway.2 points

Im a lover of all sports but there is nothing to compare in any sport with the tension and excitement when the game is in the 5th day and final session and all 3 results are on the table. Well 4 if you count a tie but thats only happened twice in 150 years.2 points

Shamus, to hit your target your total water volume should be 29l. 16l mash and 13l sparg. What are you using to heat your sparge water? I have a seperate urn that sits above my GF making my sparge process easier.2 points

Easy. Neither team takes 20 wickets and the team batting last doesn't get the runs, or it rains . But there's a lot more happens during those 5 days trying to win than a bunch of guys with bats not bothering to actually use them. And what's with those ridiculous gloves they wear? Catching a baseball barehanded is like a bloody tennis ball. Sorry, but that's pretty pansy to me.2 points

I grew up on cricket, tried watching baseball but I was bored shitless. People think nothing happens in cricket... bloody 95% of the time in baseball they just stand there and watch the ball fly past. Having played and watched both games, I find cricket a lot more tactical which I find most interesting, plus the endurance required to run in and bowl all day or the concentration and mental toughness required to bat for long periods. I liken baseball to something like Budweiser or Miller, while cricket is more interesting like a decent craft beer2 points

Munich MAC in Amarillo He is a man about town...well the world. The MAC from Munich has stopped into Amarillo for a short stay. 1.5kg Munich LME added to fermenter 900g light dry malt extract boiled in 10l 600g wheat malt extract dry, added to fermenter. 350g carapils, steeped for 30ish minutes 50g choc malt, same as carapils. 28g Amarillo mash/steeped hopped and then boiled for 30 minutes 25g of Mosaic, Azacca and Citra at flameout for a 10 min steep 22l in the fermenter with M54 yeast and a packet of ale/lager yeast blend, that was due to be used or end up as yeast nutrient. 1.049 expected OG 40 IBU with about 28 coming from the Amarillo and the rest from flameout. I will either dry hop at about 4.5g/l or maybe higher at around 7g/l. I will then gelatin and cold crash as I am hoping for a nice color that I don't want to end up with pea soup from the choc malt color addition. 4 days at 18c 1 day at 20c 3 days at 22c 2 days at 24c 4 days at 1.5c Hopefully. Cheers Norris2 points

What a disaster of a brew day. Started out nice as you can see from my nice organised photo I was a couple of points down pre boil and post boil. I had to swap BB pale malt for Coopers Pale malt but I couldn’t find it in Beersmith to adjust. Also it appears my LHBS only gave me 4.3 kgs of grain but I asked for 4.4 Anyway that’s all good. The disaster came at the death. It’s a Belgian Witbeir so there was coriander seeds and orange peel. Which I just chucked in with five mins left commando. Anyway my false bottom was as much use as tits on a nun cos some of the orange peel got under and clogged the tap. So I’m trying to decant it to my cube. Nothing coming out. Tap on full pelt. 96 degree wort. Started to panic. I blew up the silicone hose to clear it which worked but the margin of errors are fine as you have a split second to blow before boiling hot wort comes at you thanks to that bastard gravity. But she blocked again In the end I had to fill my cube via my one litre jug. It was a fkn mess. The kitchen looks like I had squatters living here for two years. If she wasn’t in NZ skiing, I’d be a single man tonight just finished clean up. The cube is full. Only a minor miracle might help me. I’ll say a decade of the rosary tonight and pray to St Anthony who’s the patron saint of lost causes. I need a beer2 points

Been a long day on AG Weissbier No. 1... bit like your Witbier Paddy Cobber.. Here pretty much the Jamil Z recommended recipe.. 50/50 Wheat and Pils Malt - noble hops - here Hallertau at 60 and a few at 5... Paddy - maybe orange peel etc caused a blockage - but my experience with wheat - could also be the effect of wheat fines - flour - coagulating/gelling up and causing blockages. I am in BIAB and you are in Grainfather Land which is different - but suspect for you Rice Hulls may be useful. Dunno. Just a thought. When I fortunately noticed the coag on the false floor legs when removing it to proceed to Hop Boil I did a full decant to another SS vessel and found a lot of heavy sludge on the vessel floor and the heating element starting to burn on - so was v happy I did the decant and investigate... Must also say I did do a Step-Mash which may have complicated things. Any BIAB Weizen Witbier or other Wheat brewers - would be happy to have any tips to avoid such instances. Got the cool air fan on the outside of the Vessel and was able to pitch tonight still. Anyway - thanks to all Brewers and @Hairy for advice on many aspects and esp. my first time with "posh" liquid yeast - got Wyeast 3068 pitched and hopefully tomorrow morning the FV at 17 deg C has a frothy welcome for me! Cheers Brewers... and one more step on this wonderful journey!'1 point

Hope so mate. Nice learning curve though hey. Then once you’ve nailed that recipe, keep making it to perfect it. The journey will never end.1 point

The 2015 & onward ones are very ordinary (IMHO). Too much CGI & the stories are crap. It's the JJ Abrams influences. The first 6 George Lucas orchestrated & directed one's are still awesome! Cheers, Lusty.1 point

Plus one to this mate. I do commando the bittering addition but that’s it. I have a number of hop socks for this reason. If you think you have enough, you probably don’t ha ha ha1 point

@BlackSands Not sure of the cause of your gastrointestinal disturbances, but it might be worth trying a few batches with Clarity Ferm, just to see. If it does make a difference, you may just have figured out something very important. In any case it is a cheap experiment, and I know you like experiments. Gluten intolerance would not explain why you don't react to commercial craft brew, but mega-swill and English ales tend to contain adjuncts, so maybe a little less malt than your all grain homebrew. English ales also tend to be lower ABV, so once again, lower dose. The fact that cask conditioned English ales don't bother you suggests it is not the yeast. Cheers, Christina.1 point
